Beautiful Black girl.
Setsuna. I kinda want to give her a different name but she’s existed in my mind and in all my comics since I was 16 (that’s four years now!). It just doesn’t feel right if she isn’t Setsuna.
Over the years, her hairstyle has changed from straight hair to more African hair. This was mainly due to my father’s influence. I would draw her and run to show him the drawing and he would say something like, “Wow, you’re getting better... but why don’t you make her look more like you?”. I guess, I’ve grown more comfortable with my identity over the years, I used to struggle with being black, having grown up in a predominantly white school with all my close friends being white people. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t ever hate my blackness and I treasure all my friends, black or white, but I did lose touch with my roots for a couple of years. Setsuna kind of traces my growth, she was, after all, a way for me to live in another world, she is to some extent; me.
From now, my career is my goal, my family my future and God my daily life. Fuck the rest.
