Ramadan comes and goes every year. This year has been unique. Spending time with Allah and no physical gatherings forced me to be more reflective than past Ramadans have allowed me to be.

I often talk about social issues, especially ones concerning Muslim women. And my only wish is for our voices to be heard, taken seriously and honored.

Reading Islam & the Problem of Black Suffering by Dr. Sherman A. Jackson over Ramadan has put into words what I’ve witnessed when it comes to Muslims.

We tend to shy away from the difficult conversations as a whole, the conversations about racism, sexism, sexuality, Islamic history & it’s nuances, etc.

My main hope going forward is that we open up to have the difficult conversations and create a shift in our thinking, and therefore our behaviors.
