Listen! - EMP #sevendaysnewyorkcityinblackandwhite Reposted from @hccoleman - Posted @withrepost • @bk2lastudio // Black Rock Legends // Legends of Now Ft. @the1865band presented by BK2LA Studio x @punk.black. We asked bands to name a song from a Black Rock Legend that’s inspired them and why. Artist: Honeychild Coleman // @hccoleman Lead Vocals & Baritone Guitar Band: The 1865 Legend: Bo Diddley Song: Who Do You Love? (1956) When I was a kid growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Bo Diddley was still very active on late night television as well as Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve. But I also had some of his records handed down from my parents. So much style, haunting sparse melodies, injected with a dose of wit and humor and he was a SHARP dresser! Really an innovator - there would be no surf guitar without Bo - and he had strong women playing in his band - Lady Bo (Peggy Jones) and The Duchess (Norma Jean Wofford). Later, as I got into collecting my own records and eventually picking up the guitar, I realized what a influence Diddley had on the guitar sounds of bands I loved like The Jesus and Mary Chain (who covered this song) and Bow Wow Wow. Bo Diddley rose above Jim Crow oppression, payola and music chart disparities, and still expressed pure joy in everything he created. 📸: @cp_krenkler Check out this song and more on our #BlackRockLegends playlist.
