#FightForDyett These are the hunger strikers who are fighting to keep Dyett high school open as a neighborhood school that serves the entire community in and around Bronzeville, on Chicago’s south-side. Many of them have been in this struggle for well over 10 years, leading sit-ins at City Hall, camping out in front of the Chicago Public School headquarters (CPS), going door-to-door in their neighborhood. They are currently rallying at CPS demanding to talk to CPS CEO Forrest Claypool.
Rising in solidarity with them is one way to make #BlackLivesMatter.
Here are some ways that you can support the hunger strikers and the struggle for Dyett HS:
1) Go in person to show support. Hunger strikers are outside Dyett HS (51st & King Drive) generally from 10am to around 5pm and then after that at Operation PUSH offices at 930 E. 50th. This is a great way to encourage the hunger strikers and to learn about the struggle first-hand and to communicate directly with organizers to find out what they need, especially if you have specific skills.
2) Follow #FightForDyett and #WeAreDyett on social media for immediate needs such as when the hunger strikers are low on liquids or supplies such as ice and cups. Also follow @TeachForJustice, @fairtrade_ervin, and @brothajitu for updates on Twitter.
3) Create your own tweets with the hashtags #FightForDyett and #WeAreDyett about why this struggle is important as well as retweeting other folks’ tweets to increase visibility on social media.
4) Get daily updates here: http://www.teachersforjustice.org/p/hunger-strike-to-save-dyett-high-school.html
5) Donate online to KOCO who have been organizing around Dyett for like forever: http://bit.ly/1K8HspJ
6) Friday 2pm Phone-In: Call Aderman Burn 773-536-8103 and Rahm 312-744-3300 and tell them that you support the hunger strikers and their demand for Dyett HS to become the Dyett Global Leadership & Green Tech HS based on the proposal that the community has created.
7) Friday 8/21 5-8PM: Jamboree for Dyett at Operation PUSH 930 E. 50th. If you are an artist and can perform, that would be great! Otherwise, show up and support! And invite everybody!
