Both sisters were raised in the slave-holding antebellum South, surrounded by harsh rules and laws. The novel explores three co-existing 19th-century American cultures: the privileged world of the South's antebellum White Planter Society, the oppressed communities of black slaves, and the noble nomadic hunter-gatherer society of the Plains Indians.

Today is the 241st birthday of the United States, although we acknowledge that both natives and colonists lived in America long before then. So let’s look at some logistics of our history, particularly human slavery, in the U.S.:

Black enslavement in the U.S. lasted 246 years (longer than the country’s been a country). It has only been 152 years since slavery ended. Only 69 years has passed since the U.S. armed forces were integrated. Brown vs. Board of Education occurred a mere 63 years ago. Black women in the South could not vote until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

We’ve had slavery in this country almost 100 years longer than we haven’t.
