I reblogged that fic recommendation list yesterday, and, hey… it can get quite difficult to get readers. While most of the stories on this list are going to be relatively well known in their respective fandoms for that specific pairing, I will try to get a few not-so-well-known stories on the list as well.
Not written in any particular order. No major spoilers in terms of plot (but I will talk slightly about the general idea of the story to allow you to gauge whether or not you would want to read said story).
A Miscellaneous Tale of Night and Day (by Starran). I honestly don’t think that there is any Pokémon Special fan who reads fanfictions who has not heard of this story just yet… but if you’re one of the few who hasn’t, then here’s your chance to read it!
Amotodan (as it is often abbreviated as) is a Pokémon Special High School AU, meaning that it is a story involving the Pokémon Special characters in a high school setting. It is, however, rather shipping focused, and mainly towards the mainstream shippings of Pokémon Special (i.e. Special, OldRival, MangaQuest, SoulSilver/BlackSoul, Frantic, Commoner, and Agency). However, it is one of the most well-written stories out there.
Amotodan is not only the English Pokémon fanfic set in the manga world with the most faves, but also the English Pokémon fanfic set in the manga world with the most follows and third place in terms of most reviews. I don’t like using stats and numbers like this, but I’m pretty sure we can all agree that this story probably got that far for a reason.
Fun fact: Amotodan is one of the first few fanfictions that I have read on the site, and Starran is one of six authors who inspired me to write stories myself.
The only downside to this story is that it is basically discontinued, with the last chapter having been uploaded all the way back in 2012.
Sincerest Apologies (by FieryFafar). If you asked me to recommend you my favorite Silver-shipping fanfic, then here you have it. It’s a oneshot of about 4k words and takes an interesting twist to the relationship of Silver and Lyra. However, unlike most of my Pokémon fanfics recommendations, this one takes place in the game universe of the franchise and is not an AU.
If you like SoulSilvershipping, are looking for a SoulSilvershipping fanfiction, and have extra time on your hands, then I really recommend this oneshot.
Wish of a Thousand Paper Cranes (by waterlily12). If Sincerest Apologies was my favorite SoulSilver fanfic, then this one is, by far, my favorite Specialshipping fanfic. It’s an AU, though, but it has the characters written near flawlessly. It’s a lot more lighthearted than the previous recommendation, which may suit more people, I guess? It’s also written around a very interesting concept, and I think that the title kind of gave away what said concept is.
MAGE (by KiwiWizard). I am pretty sure that I got into this story about the same time when I got into that fantasy obsession… hm… anyway, MAGE is another high school AU kind of story (yes, I’ve read quite a few of those…) but taking a new twist to things. Instead of going to regular schools, the Pokédex Holders all go to a school for people with magical powers. It also contains the mainstream ships up to the BW chapter.
If only I got into this during my initial Raildex hype… oh well, I’ll be off to reread this again XD.
Battle Scars (by DaPokemonMadster). If I have to pick one story from this user to recommend, then it will probably be this one. Short, great, and to the point. It’s kind of random in terms of lacking an actual plot, I suppose, but not all stories have to have a deep and well-ingrained plot to be a good story, right? I mean, this story is living proof!
Canvas of Life (by Ink Runs Through My Veins). Deaf!Yellow AU done in an incredible way. It’s beautiful, it really showcases the emotions that Yellow is struggling with in this new situation that she has been put in (something that doesn’t happen very often, I should add), and is, all in all, very beautifully written. Includes shippings of Special, OldRival, and Frantic.
Triumvirate (by Renaerys). I don’t know how to describe this story. It’s, in very simple terms, game!world with Special!characters in a realistic environment. It is incredibly well written, and the battles are very detailed. One thing that I should mention, however, is that the author changed the names for the characters to match their anime counterparts (i.e. calling Red “Ash”), but had their Pokémon Special counterparts used as basis for characterization. Despite that little tidbit, I found myself enjoying this story very much!
Warning: this story has been rated M for gore. It gets pretty intense…
That Time So Long Ago (by Celivy). I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t read a lot of Pokémon-centric fanfictions (as in “fanfictions where the humans are not the focus” Pokémon-centric). However, both this and her other oneshot are very well written. Unlike any of the other stories that I have recommended to you today, Celivy focuses on a more philosophical level. They’re incredibly short (so it shouldn’t take you too long to get through them) and to the point, and I think that the fact that they allowed me to sit down and think about it was what made me enjoy it as much as I did.
The Hero Bard (by pikaree1). Another type of story that I am, in general, not a huge fan of, but was done in a pretty good way this time around (or else I wouldn’t be recommending it). The Hero Bard follows the story of the son of Red and Yellow, and combines humor, adventure, and action into twenty-eight chapters of goodness! I should say that this story also contains OCs (which should go without saying as it is a second generation story), but it also contains OCs submitted by readers. I know that there are people out there who don’t like those kinds of stories, so I thought I should warn you up front. Having said that, this story did a really good job in terms of incorporating all the OCs into the story.
The PokeSpe Story Collection (by Zero Slash One). Pretty much every other story on this list has one thing in common: they included at least one mainstream ship. What did this author do? Write a story where literally anything goes. So if you like finding out how well characters pair up with one another, then I think you’ve found your story. Rated M for reasons, though. I should point out that this story has opened up the eyes to rarely heard ships like TreeStars (Sapphire/Crystal) and Lazurite (Blue(f)/Crystal), so…
Also, there is now a “what if” mini-series being uploaded under this title as well, revolving around Ruby and a different result in the Rusturf Tunnel. It’s pretty good so far.
Special Randomness (by 1358456). I started this list with my favorite story of one of the authors who inspired me, so I think it is only fitting to end this list with my favorite story of yet another author who has inspired me (and who is the only one of those who is still actively writing and uploading to this very day). This story, as its name suggests, involves interactions between the Pokédex Holders. I absolutely loved it. I know that there are other, newer stories that I have yet to read (which I am hoping to get to in the near future), but this story has a special place in my heart. So… there you go!
And that is all the time that I have for my fics recommendation list for now. As you may have noticed, all stories here are for Pokémon and Pokémon Special alone; I should probably do the same for some other franchises, shouldn’t I?
Oh well, I hope you liked this list, I hope that you could find a new fic or two to read from this list, and I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day (and every other day to come)! Take care, everybody!
That’s an interesting ship! Obviously they’ll be older (I would sure hope they’re not getting married at 10/11 LMAO), so they’re in their 20s here.
***“Marry me?”Lyra looked up from the Azurill in her lap to her boyfriend, thinking that perhaps she had misheard him. But no, Silver was nervously sitting beside her, holding out an open box. The ring was gorgeous, and Lyra brought her hand to her mouth in a gasp.“Well?”“Silver, I-. Yes. Yes! Yes, of course I’ll marry you!” Lyra yelled out as she practically launched into her now fiance’s arms, hugging him tightly and pressing numerous kisses to his cheeks. Silver laughed, closing the box and squirming a bit at the sudden show of affection, cheeks flushing. The Azurill that Lyra had left unattended interrupted the couple’s embrace to return to it’s spot on Lyra’s lap, making the girl laugh. “Seems someone’s jealous.”“I’d love see that Azurill present you with a diamond ring if it’s so jealous,” Silver retorted, playfully rolling his eyes and putting an arm around his fiance.Lyra cuddled up to Silver contently, smiling softly. “I love you.”“I love you too.”
