Hi Ms. Lock! I hope you've been doing well ( ╹▽╹ ) There's been some buzz around the Blade community because of the recent development of his character,,, Some are saying that they hate it and the such. If you're caught up with the recent update, may I know what you think of it? Feel free to not answer if you don't want to of course!
HELLO HELLO!!!
i've given this a lot of thought, actually. i understand that hoyoverse doesn't have the best history when it comes to handling character development for their characters that fit the antagonist category (the harbingers are a prime example), but i'm not getting that from blade.
this line in particular stood out to me. i find blade to be a deeply tragic character, with his brand of tragedy tinged with irony, which might be why i enjoy writing him so much. he went from someone who lost his home to the borisins to a person responsible for destroying the worlds of others, a blacksmith to a weapon, and a short-life species who took pride in the ephemerality of his existence to an immortal. an amalgamation of opposites, undergoing a continual process of transformation. imho, this last transformation into mortenax blade is very in line with his character. it shows something like acceptance, or, as his trailer was titled, nirvana, salvation from his past.
towards what he perceived to be the end of his life, he finally reflects and is honest about his regrets. i know i'm biased but i find the exchange between him and his master in these moments to be some of the best writing we've gotten from planarcadia up until this point.
if he were to have met his end here, it would've been a waste. the painful process of being forged anew fits him well. it isn't the end he wanted, and, arguably, that total annihilation would've been easier than having to carry on, but he is able to reject that end, as well as the promises of abundance that once lured him down the wrong path.
it's not quite redemption, but taking the reins of his own fate, wherever it may lead him. personally, i like the direction they're taking blade's character. my only selfish complaint is that i wish we could've gotten more insight from him afterwards... i hope that they'll show some of his reflection on what happened inside oroboros's corpse at some point in a future update. thematically speaking, his rebirth taking place there is a strong choice, what with its implications of infinity, cycles, self-devouring, etc... i say let hoyoverse cook with this one.
