I think a lot of people tend to assume that having a character that is sexist makes the piece of media sexist and it really isnt the same thing. For example, doctor who (in recent years) is largely a sexist piece of media because female characters are never given their own agency or character development whereas gotg has a sexist character but doesn't treat it's female characters in that way.
At the start of the film Peter Quill is a bit of a sexist pig, he also straight up murders two people and steals something. That doesn't mean that the film is condemning murder and theft. He is a 'womanizer' but he also betrays the ravagers who raised him at the start of the film. Being raised by ravagers also quite indicative that he's probably not a nice guy. He's supposed to be a tool and yeah it's supposed to be funny at times but the idea is that they're unlikely heroes. They aren't noble like thor or captain america. Quill is arguably a womanizer like tony stark but they're hardly the same character.
ALSO on the point of him being a 'womanizer', what's wrong with a guy sleeping with a lot of girls? It's never implied that it was non-consensual, surely we can be sex posi enough to say that the girls are o k with that arrangement.
and like the original post refers to it as a dudebro film and i'm just like? yeah frat boys probably will like it, i liked it too. And my mum liked it, and my female cousin who is 13 liked it. Half a million girls on this website liked it and y'all are going to call it a dudebro film? Sometimes girls like the hans solo/james bond/indiana jones characters doesn't mean we want to date them in real life, doesn't mean we approve of their actions and it doesn't mean we don't want female characters with their own agency either.
which this film had by the way
not saying it was perfect and it would have been nice to have more of a back story for all of the characters but in a 2 and a bit hour film how much time can you really spend on exposition? Like it was clear it was a 'peter quill' movie more than anything but even he only got the one flashback at the start of the film which P NECESSARY to explain how a human (assumed human) got there in the first place.
film adaptations change things, it's sad but tru
