Cold weather in winter. Remember that? Yeah I know, it's a world gone mad. Anyway here are a few pics from Blairadam from a couple of weeks ago when I happened upon some beautiful hair ice. After a couple of days of hard frost it's actually quite easy to find it in woodlands where there's lots of deadwood on the ground.
The fine hairs are indeed ice, and it's believed to be caused by a fungus releasing carbon dioxide as it breaks the wood down from the inside. The increased pressure inside the wood forces moisture out of the tiny pores on the wood's surface, which freezes on contact with the outside world and continues to grow as more moisture is pushed out. Lovely :)
