Materially poor, but culturally rich. “The village lies ahead of us now; a collapsing relic of the community which once formed the most westerly permanent settlement in Europe. At its peak in 1916, the island’s population was around 176 living in some 30 single storey whitewashed homes. It was a settlement built for shelter against a harsh natural environment; few windows, no electricity or running water.
