The recent, unexpected success of Mad Max: Fury Road has made post-apocalyptic, dystopian fiction marketable again: with three sequels already confirmed, it is very likely that this particular branch of science-fiction will be the “hot” genre in the upcoming years. A wasteland of opportunities is on the horizon.
This series is based on Blatta, a cult graphic novel by Alberto ponticelli. Born in Milan, Mr. Ponticelli is a multi-award winning comic book writer and artist of international prestige, having collaborated with major publishers like Dark Horse, Marvel, Image, IDW, Vertigo, Disney, DC Comics, Koei japan and Les Humanoïdes Associés. In 2009 his work on Unknown Soldier was nominated for an Eisner Award.
First published in Italy in 2008, Blatta was an immediate sold-out: a second repairt followed in 2014, with identical results.
Alberto Ponticelli oversees the project as executive producer and show-runner: aside from gathering prestige within the comic’s fanbase, it ensure an optimal cinematic translation of his peculiar visual style.
The screenplay is penned by a team of writers including frequent collaborator Alessio Calabresi, whose credits include the award-winning documentary March of the Gods.
The visual effects are produced by acclaimed, Milan-based studio Equal Design. A major force in the advertising world, Equal Design also worked on several, high-profile feature-film projects including the Golden Globe-nominated Baarìa by Giuseppe Tornatore.
