Blaxxx – For No Apparent Reason (12XU)
Seems like 2015 is going to be another year where Bim Thomas gives us plenty to listen to and that draws very little complaints from me. Blaxxx is a side project that seems to have taken shape rather quickly with a couple fellas from OBN III's while Thomas was spending time down at SXSW last year. For No Apparent Reason is the product of a recording session that took place shortly afterward and resulted in four blown out stompers of garage/psych jams. Maybe not the most essential thing that has been put out during the torrid flurry of releases by the Obnox mastermind, but it's also certainly worth hearing if you're a fan of pretty much everything else the man has been involved in. It's not terribly removed from the Obnox material, but definitely seems to get even looser and heavier on the older psych vibes, keeping it raw and loud at every moment...nothing wrong with that. If this is the only material that comes of this collaboration, it would be a shame, but would still pretty much be worth it. Blaxxx - Blaxxx (stream) BUY IT!
Lamont “Bim” Thomas is Cleveland, Ohio’s most prolific musician. I honestly don’t know if the man sleeps. Bim has released music as Obnox, and has also collaborated with other musicians on such esteemed projects as Bassholes, and This Moment in Black History. On March 3rd, 12XU will be dropping his latest blazing effort which is a collab with two Austin musicians; Tom Triplett and Orville Neeley of OBN III’s. I’m not going to make this a fluff piece, people. I’m going to tell you motherfuckers how it is. Bim is one of the most slept on musicians in the world. You won’t find him playing Coachella or even Austin’s Psych Fest. Perhaps it’s because he lives in Cleveland? Fuck that! He cut his teeth paying dues in Columbus. The soil surrounding Ohio State breeds winners, dammit. Bim has even recorded a warped, demented version of “Hang on Sloopy” that sounds like he’s shoving a guitar up Urban Meyer’s ass.
