On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me Christmas Sugar Cookies! 'Bout time! While the recipes require plenty of time and love, we think it's well worth it to spend a few hours decorating them with family. 

The first Christmas cookies in the US were brought in by the Dutch in the 17th century. Because of new importation laws between Germany and the US, cookie cutters became available between 1871 and 1906. They were often in the shape of Christmas ornaments, and soon recipe books were teaching bakers how to use the baking tool to create this holiday treat.

What you'll need:

3 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 egg, beaten

Powdered sugar for rolling out dough

On the fifth day of Christmas food, my true love gave to me a pecan pie recipe!

A dessert of pure decadence, pecan pie is primarily made of sugar, butter, and pecans—perfect for celebrating.

The gooey pie is particularly popular in Southern American cusine, but the origin is not clear. Some believe it was first created in Louisiana, saying that the French invented pecan pie soon after settling in New Orleans, when the Native Americans introduced the pecan nut. Curiously enough, it didn't start showing up in cookbooks until the early 20th century! 

I for one am glad it did.

The Pioneer Woman has a great recipe if you're ready to indulge your sweet tooth this holiday:

1 whole Unbaked Pie Crust 

1 cup White Sugar

3 Tablespoons Brown Sugar

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1 cup Corn Syrup

3/4 teaspoons Vanilla

1/3 cup Melted Butter (salted)

3 whole Eggs, Beaten

1 cup (heaping) Chopped Pecans

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Christmas food!

We're celebrating the 12 days of Christmas foodie-style, paying homage to the foods that we love to love and, for some, love to hate.

First up? Eggnog:

Love it or hate it, eggnog is a Christmas tradition that’s not going away. The frothy drink is typically made with eggs, milk or cream, sugar, and spices like cinnamon or nutmeg, but the best part is the spike—with bourbon, rum, whiskey, or another liquor.

But did you know there was actually an Eggnog Riot that occurred in the US Military Academy in 1826? Whiskey was smuggled into the barracks to make eggnog for a Christmas Party. It resulted in the court-martialing of 20 cadets and one enlisted soldier.
