I know a lot of you like to put together care packages for people experiencing homelessness. If you're one of those people, good for you! You're a great person for doing what you're doing. Helping people in need is such a great deed and I have nothing but respect for the ones who do. But as a homeless person myself, there are a lot of things that are hard to come by that no one really thinks of.
For example, when I first officially became homeless in August, I caught a nasty cold. it was literally torture, I was coughing my ass off to the point of vomiting. Cold medicine is nearly impossible to come across when you're penny less, so consider adding cough drops, travel size tissue packs, cough syrup, small bottles of Vicks, Benadryl, and nasal decongestants. They can truly be a lifesaver.
Some areas have places for the homeless that provide ibuprofen and Tylenol, but a lot of them don't. Many homeless people walk wherever they go, and after so long on foot, you get severe leg and muscle cramps. Consider throwing small bottles of Tylenol and ibuprofen. They can really help.
Another good idea is candy. Not chocolate or other things like that, but suckers and hard candy. Whenever I was starving and couldn't eat, I would suck on some hard candy and it would help with hunger for a little while.
Tampons and pads!! You can get them free at a lot of places, but sometimes the unexpected could happen. For example, one night at 11 PM, I started my period. It didn't start on the day it should have, and all the places that provided those things were closed. I had to use toilet paper and it was GROSS!! So definitely keep that in mind for the ladies.
If possible, vouchers for Goodwill and other thrift shops. When looking for a job, you want to look nice and have clean clothing that's not all tattered and ripped.
Some other items include individual packs of instant coffee, hot chocolate, or flavored drink mixes, a book of matches, cheap mini flashlights, bug spray, (depending on the season) a small tarp to lay on, extra pairs of socks (after walking a long time your feet will stink. BAD. A pair of panties or boxers, because you know, accidents can happen.
Good ideas for snacks include crackers, granola bars, protein bars, (they keep you fuller longer) sunflower seeds, instant tuna packs, and I've seen these little boxes in stores where there's egg or ham salad that come with crackers and a little spoon to spread it with. They aren't expensive either!
Then the basics. Soap, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, razors, shaving cream, deoderant, comb, baby wipes, first aid stuff, maybe a backpack or some sort of bag to carry their things.
As for winter time, a hat, gloves, scarf, jacket, blankets, etc.
Also, it's a good idea to put a small note of encouragement in each package. Something short, sweet, and motivational. It could really go a long way.. trust me.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time out of their day to help those in need. God bless you!! ❤️

This is how you can help your local community.
Small boxes are popping up on corners around the United States. Filled with food and supplies for those in need, these Little Free Pantries are a hyperlocal way for individuals to support their communities.
Volunteers stock the stands with non-perishable foods like peanut butter crackers and rice, and hygiene products like tampons, toothpaste, and toilet paper so that people who are in need can take them.
“I think people respond to it because it’s about community and neighborhood,” Jessica McClard, who started the project in Fayetteville, Arkansas, told ABC News. “It just really seemed to me to have to do with a hyper-local action on behalf of the immediate neighborhood, which would raise the quality of life for one's neighbors. But it was a bigger issue this was addressing.”
The first Little Free Pantry opened May 12. The pilot box was built by Joe Utsch, Sammie Stephenson, and Josh McClard, and was the brainchild of Jessica McClard.
