The Meat Locker is an art box meant to critique ethics of the meat industry. The work is designed to look like a meat locker, the area in which meat is stored. This piece was created as a way to grapple with issues innate with eating most meat such as overconsumption, environmental concerns, disease, abuse, and lack of knowledge on the process that happens behind the scenes. Viewers are meant to question what and how they consume.
This is a topic that interests me because I have been a vegetarian for many years, and am fascinated with society’s obsession with meat. I would never want to convince somebody to change something medically like a diet/dietary restriction. My intention with this project is to create a dialogue, whether internal or not, and maybe convince people to think before they buy. I don’t want to create shame around eating, as there is enough of that in the world without me adding to it. I want to create a world where people demand justice for the inequalities existing within our food systems though. It does not spawn on the shelf, and a lot of very privileged people (myself included) take for granted what feels “owed” to us, such as the lives of animals. The same people who would never dare raise, kill, and skin the animal are the same people arguing cooking, eating, and digesting are neutral and natural acts. Just because someone does not hold the knife does not mean there is no blood on their hands.
