Tubing and Tubular Mascara Application, Removal, Facts, and Tips

Tubing mascaras are often met with a lot of confusion. Unless you’re a makeup artist or major beauty fanatic the term has probably left you a little confused and scratching your head. When previously mentioned on Makeup Tips there were multiple comments asking “what are tubing mascaras?” So here is some detailed information, answering each of your questions and concerns.

What is Tubing Mascara

Tubing (or sometimes called tube or tubular mascaras) are very much like your regular mascara, except rather than being applied and drying straight down, tubing mascaras contain special polymers which “wrap” around each lash which then contracts and dries down to an almost rubber like finish. This formula is gentler on the lashes as it doesn’t rely on thick heavy waxes and pigments which can be difficult to remove. The polymers create “tubes” and therefore are known as tubing mascara.

Tubing Mascara Application

Although the formula is different, tubing mascaras can be applied in the exact same way as regular mascara. You do not need to use any special technique, but a basic one (Wiggle the wand from side to side at the base of your lashes) Tubing mascara can be built up easily to create a super intense lash and you’re able to apply a second coat even after the mascara has dried (without that horrible flaky, clumpy, spider lash look)  One of the best tips for tubing mascaras is to use them on top of false lashes! The polymer formula allows you to easily remove the mascara and allow your false lashes to remain in great condition.

Tubing Mascara for Sensitive Eyes

Whilst some people say tubing mascaras are fantastic for sensitive eyes it’s best to exercise some caution, there are some occasions where the polymer based mascara may irritate sensitive eyes or contact lenses wearers. Tubing mascaras aren’t the very best, end-all option for people with sensitive eyes, but it really depends on the person and their level of sensitivity.

Tubing Mascara Staying Power, Smudgeproof, Waterproof, Flakeproof

A major benefit of tubing mascaras is the staying power. The polymer tubes cling tightly onto each lash, preventing water, oil, tears and dirt from disrupting and lifting up the product. This means the mascara is smudgeproof, waterproof, and has great staying power. As the formula is very fluid and “wet” it’s also less prone to clumping and flaking so your lashes should stay looking fresh all day.

Tubing Mascara Removal

The removal of tubing mascaras is SUPER easy (and will actually save you money in the long run!) There is no need to use half a bottle of makeup remover to remove your mascara or rigorously tug and pull. To remove tubing mascara simply run your fingers under some water and gently slide them side to side to remove the mascara, as you do this the friction and water combination will cause the mascara to come off in tiny little tubes.

Note: Some say that tubing mascara removal is the key to avoiding panda eyes, and that mascara can be removed with the rest of your makeup remaining in-tact.  Whilst that would be amazing, it is a little ambitious. In most circumstances the water used to remove the mascara may impact the rest of your makeup, and you may end up with the tiny black mascara tubes all over your face and under eye area so if you’re planning on removing your mascara and applying it all over again, think twice.

Are Tubing Mascara’s THE best mascara?

Tubing mascara’s aren’t necessarily the very best mascaras, but they’re not the worst either. There are great tubing mascaras and there are bad ones. Some regular mascaras may give you longer and thicker lashes, but tubing mascaras may have better benefits. It really depends on your personal preference and what you want out of a mascara.

The Best Performing Tubing Mascaras

There are so many different mascaras on the market, and it can often be difficult to differentiate which mascaras are tubing vs regular.
