hey, so i know it’s not a part of the main storyline—which is why it’s a standalone episode (you can find it on kissanime under fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood specials—but the episode with the blind alchemist and rosalie really strikes me. (click for spoilers; all text)
by the time you’re through with the episode, not only is the background for juda (sp) and the family sort of deceiving, it’s also just really oddly honorable? and i say this because, certainly, lying to someone to keep them happy feels like a common trope in any sort of media. we tell white lies to save people from the truth; but in the case of this family, it’s the only thing that’s keeping their family together, and the alchemist sound of mind.
he traded his eyes for a little girl (who he saw as his own daughter), and to know she’s alive and well, that something he attempted and was destined to be taboo and unsuccessful, actually brought her back? well, i’m sure he feels his sacrifice was more than worth it. we find that none of that is true, that the family and staff all harbor this massive secret, and the alchemist will never know.
he’s literally blinded from the truth, but i think it’s the only thing that’s saving him. it’s their bit of mercy.
