Big Thief - Two Hands (@4ad) "Nearly every song overflows with tears and blood, bared teeth and broken tongues; living, killing, dying. There are few overdubs, and sometimes you hear the band members instructing each other when to step back or take a solo, like they’re just rehearsing for the actual performance. It makes for a specific kind of rock record: an attempt to capture a band’s imperfect, raw essence, to show what happens when they simply count to four and take off. The approach is best known for accentuating a tough, ragged cohesion, like Neil Young records in the ’70s, but this record goes somewhere different. The more Big Thief zoom in, the more magical they sound." - @reapofevil/@pitchfork Happy album release day, @bigthiefmusic! #TwoHands is indeed 'a specific kind of rock record,' indeed, truly something special and rare. Delicate and sparse #folkrock, but still widescreen and detailed enough to be interesting. Reminds me of the glacial country rock of #JesseSykes, if that's not too specific of a reference, perhaps with a touch of psyched-out fuzz folk a la Portland's #BlitzenTrapper or the intricate big-ensemble intimacy of NOLA's #HurrayForTheRiffRaff. These special, spacious arrangements are brought to life via exquisite songwriting and musicianship. There're actual songs here, the kind to sing along to, get lost in, to throw on mixtapes to express yr heart&soul, yr love, yr hope. This is my first #BigThief record, really. I'm a big, big fan! Now spinning: Furr by Blitzen Trapper. Playing an album before or after the day's work helps me to balance-out the highs and lows of the week. It helps when I feel defeated as well as when I feel confident, capable, strong, loving and compassionate. Missing old friends and vinyl nights together. The world keeps on spinning even when we are spinning far away from people we love.
