Glitching - Experiment
In order to explore the art of glitching and what it means to glitch things, I have gone out and tried to find software/web based glitching services that creates the traditional glitching effect. This post explores http://snorpey.github.io/ This web based glitching tool was recommended to a friend of mine when I asked them what glitching meant to them (as explored in my previous posts). He told me that there were places where I could go that created this glitching effect and was simple to do.
I began to input my own photos that I wanted to glitch and test out the softwares, first image being a personal photograph of the street life on our recent trip to New Caledonia. Once inserted I began to notice a dynamic and artistic change to the image right away. ORIGINAL:
IMPORTED:
It became clear that this web based system was more powerful than I first thought it to be. The image became different in colour hue and I saw some glitching lines through the images as if the image was misaligned. To furthur explore this program and it’s limitations I began to see the “amount”, “seed”, “iterations” and “quality” tabs and began to wonder what each tab corresponded to. By changing the amount tab, I found that the image changed extremely drastically in both colour and number of glitched lines. This created a very mellow and separated image with the hard horizontal lines cutting the image into 5. I actually loved this result.
By changing the seed of the image, the number of lines remained relatively the same, separating the image into 5 sections but changing the hue by quite a large difference displaying a more cool tone which juxtaposed with the prior image and made it extremely enlightening.
I then moved on to changing the number of iterations which led to the most drastic result so far, creating more lines and altering the colour. I loved this image due to the separation of warm and cool colours distinctively but in a smooth and gradual rainbow like change. This made me wonder and think about how beautiful this has made the image compared to the original and in my eye I find this to be so much more unique and special. This has opened my eyes to the power and potential of glitch art.
By cranking and messing with the quality the image began to take place in more of a pixel based glitched format. This is often associated with Computer Science (my university course) and I found this to be extremely familiar and one of the reasons why I wanted to explore glitching as a concept. It reminded me of the old nintendo gameboys where this would occur when the cartridge had dust or something happened to the chip. This had it’s on positive taste and impact and makes the user wonder what was the original image behind the glitch.
Overall it is fair to say that snorpey.github.io has allowed me to see the potential and levels of glitch art on a single jpeg image and how much this change has positive views and artistic connotations. I can’t simply wait to explore other means of glitching and explore this area furthur and incorporate all my knowledge from Computer Science and experimentation with glitching. Overall I found this experiment truly helpful.
