MAJOR WORK
STATEMENT:
I wanted to tell a story, a story within my documentation as well as my art piece in order to create a complete piece of work and have an ending to what seemed to be a never ending research task. Though the brief claimed Tumblr to be documentation and not a diary but I felt as if my style complimented the lighter tone and mood that matched my personality. My final art piece was mostly a gradual advancement and combination of techniques from the various of artworks and artists. Since the start I began to see glitching differently to those around me. I found glitching to be more than just digital art but related it heavily with our personal lives, experiences and events as continuously explored in my previous assessment.
“This is where my concept lies, the notion that our personal lives are forever glitching. Leading to different directions, viewpoints, changes and explorations that changes us and makes us who we are as individuals. It is due to these unavoidable circumstances of failure and exploration that allows us to explore creative possibilities with our lives” – statement (assessment 1)
When writing that last assignment, I knew that I wanted to talk about my personal life through failure, loss and exploration and how those can be seen as glitches which ultimately allows us to advance in better light. (Recommended to re-read my previous statement)

Like the output of a HEX (glitching) file, photographs allow us to document the glitched output (process) of our lives . I chose photographs (from the past) as my main median as both the background and silhouette overlay as it essentially records the unavoidable glitching process which are our lives. With each step we take, we are creating new memories, overwriting old ones and learning from it all. The question asks to explore the possibilities of glitch and to me, our lives are that very definition of glitching. My experiments with destruction of the past let to various findings which all fine tuned my concept. The destruction of the graduation photo was special as it allowed me to focus on the importance of the event as the photo was slowly glitched away.
My artwork is no longer art to me, it’s a part of me and what I wanted to experience coming into this research task. I didn’t have to explore my past, I didn’t have to look through my old photos and crying over them and all the memories that come from it. I wanted to experience what it was like again. What it was like to have a brother. My younger brother (Adam) passed away August 10th 2005. This was my way to connect with him again. Like a glitch, his death was unexpected. An irregularity and disruption in my system. In the short term, I had to live alone for weeks at the age of 12 but at the time and reflecting on it now I never thought it would have bettered my own life to this degree. That was my glitch. The event that costed everything but allowed myself to see everything. To me this assignment has gone beyond glitching in any form of the imagination but my artwork does what I need it to do and that’s to remember and recall the output of this glitch as if it was just a normal Hex glitched file. Since his death we were introduced to God, from that it has changed my life. That few weeks alone at the age of 12 has taught me more than any school or course has ever taught me. Like how glitching finds errors and allows the user to fix it, events within our lives are also able to allow the user to find better light. It was because of that glitch that I’ve developed this caring/ ongoing and extroverted nature as I was bought up since then to live what he couldn’t. Throughout my major images include Adam and the best memories I had with him. It’s seen throughout the background, forground and mid-ground and is the makeup of the photos but underlying the memories is the silhouette of me. These are the memories and glitches that push me to becoming and exploring being a better individual and is the underlying message behind all of my photos.
With my documentation I always explored on context and how glitching directly alters most of the image and strips away the context that makes the story as seen through wax, fire and digital manipulation as explored in previous experiments. If I never disclosed my story and context, the effect of the artwork is largely diminished just by viewing these images. They are powerful, they are meaningful not just to me but to those around me. These are all techniques that were common through the viewing of the artists I reviewed.
After exploring déjà vu as a literal glitch within our memories, I stumbled across his artwork coincidently named “déjà vu” – Nigel Cox which provided the gloomy, spacious and isolated mood seen so commonly with his art pieces. He found beauty within silence and allowed me to create a sense of memory and remembrance which was important to my idea of life’s glitch and how these glitches are necessary actively and subconsciously to our continuation. Jasper Jame’s artworks are obviously influential as he played with high contrast situations and silhouettes to creating the same effect that Nigel did. Erik Johansson on the other hand has always been influencial being one of my favourite artists with his intricate detailing with lighting and creativity. His work simply amazes me and I had to mention it in my documentation. With my artwork I combined all of their ideas with my own sense of memories with childhood images to create in my eye a precious art piece that holds so much value within me having brought up a topic that hasn’t been brought up in a long time.
