One of the main rules of writing is to stick to what you know. On the other hand, I have a strict life motto that “rules are for suckers” so I often break them any chance I get. That being said, after quite an extended hiatus from writing, I felt compelled to write about a very sensitive topic that I am fully aware risks coming off completely ignorant and idiotic as I can’t possibly relate to it whatsoever. On the contrary, it’s a very timely and important one that needs to be discussed from a variety of angles, therefore my self-conscious apprehension is irrelevant. Also, I of course sought out validation from a few of my “black friends” to make sure I didn’t make a complete fool of myself with this. *Note: their “approval” obviously doesn’t mean it will be universally well-received but hopefully this at least does a little good.
