‘Above the Law’ chronicles police violence in Calgary, AB
Calgary has officer involved shootings at a higher rate than the 10 largest cities combined!
TW for the first few minutes. It’s a story of what is essentially a man taken on a “starlight tour” by CPD; left for dead in -30C weather. He had a friend’s phone on him but didn’t have the passcode so he could only call 911 for help. Dispatch had been told to hang up on him, which they did. He called again and the officer who responded tazed him in the back and beat him.
The victim was then charged with assaulting an officer.
He was only acquitted because there was video footage.
He filed a complaint which was ignored and a few months later it happed again. The same (2nd) cop beat a man resulting in permanent brain damage and the loss of his victim’s eye. The cop claimed self defence because his victim spat blood at him.

The video sadly demonstrates how horribly I was treated by a law enforcement officer last year in the midst of my team, the Toronto Raptors, winning its first world championship. It was an exhilarating moment of achievement for our organization, for our players, for our city, for our country, and for me personally, given my long-tenured professional journey in the NBA. Yet, unfortunately, I was reminded in that moment that despite all of my hard work and success, there are some people, including those who are supposed to protect us, who will always and only see me as something that is unworthy of respectful engagement. And, there's only one indisputable reason why that is the case -- because I am Black. What saddens me most about this ordeal is that the only reason why I am getting the justice I deserve in this moment is because of my success. Because I'm the President of a NBA team, I had access to resources that ensured I could demand and fight for my justice. So many of my brothers and sisters haven't had, don't have, and won't have the same access to resources that assured my justice. And that's why Black Lives Matter.

Black Lives Matter Vancouver - Black Lives Matter has chapters across the globe, with one right here in Vancouver. It works to “draw attention to our largely invisibilized communities, celebrate people of colour and work in solidarity with other Black Lives Matter chapters across North America.”
Black in BC Community Support Fund for COVID 19 - This is a fundraiser to help an emergency micro-grant for Black people in B.C., who are struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hogan’s Alley Society – The non-profit organization is committed to researching, preserving and publicizing Black history throughout B.C.
Black Health Alliance – This charity is trying to reduce racial disparities in health access across Canada.
Black Youth Helpline – The hotline focuses on community development and support for local black youth
.Federation of Black Canadians – The national non-profit works to advance political, cultural and economic interests of Black Canadians. It focuses on community building, higher education, health, economic security and criminal justice reform.
Harriet Tubman Community Organization – This organization provides Black youth with a sense of belonging and connection to their heritage. It offers culturally relevant programs in the form of summer camps, counselling, leadership programs, social events and more.

Black Liberation Collectives (BLC) are an international movement of students challenging anti-Black racism in post-secondary institutions.
