Blog Review: Lucy Williams Global

Found right here on tumblr.com, @lucywilliamsglobal is a travel blogger who provides her audience with traveling tips, and photos from her travels with related stories in the description.

I found her blog to be a fun reading and viewing experience! From Tumblr I was able to find her website, lucywilliamsglobal.com, which was easy to navigate and quite interactive. Although it has the same content as her Tumblr blog, it had more information about the blogger herself, and links leading to her Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, just to name a few. Overall, I think the organization of her website was neat and user-friendly.

The specific blog entry that caught my eye was a recent one; 5 Tips How to Buy & Pack A Capsule Wardrobe. Being a person who enjoys travel myself, I thought I could pick up a few helpful tips, and indeed, I was correct. Firstly, I had never known the term for a capsule wardrobe, only the concept, so I learned new terminology today. I also learned some great tips about color-coordination (not that my wardrobe strays far from all black, with an occasional flash of color, to be honest) and keeping my wardrobe interesting, but minimal for travel’s sake.

Williams provided links to her previous, related blog posts as well as clothing brands, and it was done in a non-disruptive fashion. There were a few Amazon ads as well that were borderline obtrusive, but they didn’t take over the screen, so overall they weren’t horribly distracting; they did pertain to what was being said, so they were actually rather helpful. It was a wise business move for Williams, in my opinion, to have links going back to her other posts so that she could promote her own brand; whether or not she was sponsored by the clothing brands or simply mentioning them was unclear, but I believe she was not sponsored. Still, it boosts recognition for their brands as well, which could lead more online traffic in their direction.

Her ending was well done. She leaves room for responses, asking her readers if they have more tips to share, encouraging conversation. She also encourages readers to share the post on their own social media platforms, which could not only be helpful to readers’ friends and family, but will boost Williams’ exposure and the online traffic to her website. It’s a simple, but effective method; and she did it politely!

Overall: Lucy Williams maintains a user-friendly blog with very helpful information for new or learning travelers, and I like it. I’ll break down my ratings into sections...

Layout: 10/10 Content: 7/10 Information: 10/10 Business Skill: 10/10 Engagement: 6/10 Eloquence: 10/10 To comment on the lower scores, I only rated the content a 7 out of 10 because although there’s a lot and it’s largely helpful if that’s the sort of help you’re looking for, it does become slightly redundant. Her audience engagement is present, but not...grabbing. It’s average. It’s there though, so although it doesn’t encourage introverts like me to participate, some of the audience will still respond.

And, to comment on what I meant by eloquence, I mean that she words her posts well, and she does it concisely. It’s easy to read and understand, which is very valuable!

Alam mo yung feelings na sa tingin mo ay naprepresure ka dahil sa sabi ng mga kapatid mo na ikaw ang bread winner ng pamilya, to the point na ayaw mo nang magkamali kasi sa tingin mo pagnagkamali ka madidisappoint mo ang pamilya mo, kaya noong nangyari nga ang kinakatakutan mo, ang bumagsak sa klase, sasabihin mo sa sarili mo na IM DEAD, feeling mo kase na you failed your family and their expectation on you, pero noong narinig ko ang sabi nila na "natural lang ang pagkakamali, nagkakamali tayo para matuto tayo sa pagkakamali natin" doon ko napagtanto na wag kang matakot magkamali dahil pagnagkamali ka ibig sabihin natututo ka, parang sa sabi sabi na hindi mo matututunan ang magbisikleta hanggat hindi ka nagkakamali, kaya naging ganito ako ngayon dahil sa pagkakamali ko. Doon ko napagtanto na kailan man hindi magiging tama ang mali ngunit ang mali ay pwedeng itama.

SA BAWAT PAGKAKAMALI KO NATUTUTO AKO

hindi ko maipaliwanag ang aking nadarama dahil sa bawat segundo at minuto sa buhay ko ay hindi ko maipaliwanag kung bakit mo ako ginaganito hindi ko naman sinasadyang mahulog ako sayo at hindi ko maipaliwanag kung mali nga bang mahulog ako sayo,oo mahal kita at hindi madaling isuko ang nararamdaman ko para sayo, pero aaminin kong nagkamali ako dahil hindi man lng kita kayang ipaglaban kaya gumawa ako ng paraan para itama ang pagkakamaling nagawa ko dahil para sakin magiging tama lng ang mali kung gagawa ka ng paraan kasi marami naman paraan para gawing tama ang nagawang pagkakamali dahil sa bawat pagkakamali natututo tayo.

What are your cinematic inspirations?

If you ask anyone that knows me, one of the words they’ll likely describe me as is “animated”, and I am indeed. As such, I tend to think in terms of animation: exaggeration, metaphor, and other forms of emotive and thematic representation. I will wholeheartedly admit that I’m a huge fan of anime, particularly romantic comedy. When creating the world, writing the story, and even drawing the storyboards, I very much imagined it as an animated piece, inspired by works like My Love Story!! and Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun, but also taking elements from Madoka Magika and Akira.

However, the closest inspirations for Arthur and Gwen’s characterizations and their relationship likely comes from one of my favourite films, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack is so brilliant but his incredible ambition blinds him of Sally’s affections and his inevitable doom. On the other hand, Sally empathizes with Jack’s inner turmoil and longs for his affection, but is too afraid to act on her feelings.

At the basis of Jack and Sally’s relationship is this concept of timing. That they may indeed be meant to be together, but the time is not right. It is not until they both do a bit of maturing that they will one day reunite and have the relationship they’ve both been longing for.

How will you introduce your character(s)? -- Gwen

Similar to Arthur, Gwen is “discovered” along the course of the plot. She has been present the entire time but her insecurity of having a presence and Arthur’s aloofness have hid her until now. When she is introduced, however, it is startling to both Arthur and the audience. Arthur is just minding his own business when suddenly this odd girl invades his comfort zone. He wasn’t expecting anything significant to occur outside is plan and neither did she think she would get caught. Nonetheless, the two have made a great impression on each others’ lives by being the first person to truly notice them and it is this intimate bond that binds them.

What’s her arc? -- Gwen

We may not see Gwen during the second act, but I feel  that her character arc would be something like the following. Gwen enters the void alone but not with an objective like Arthur has. Rather, she enters the realm by mistake but is unable to return. She then gains a new simple objective: survival. Her passion burns too intensely within her for her to give up and become a Lost Soul so she keeps on fighting in any way that she can. She may not have a destination but she will fight to her very last breath. One more thing that keeps her going, however, is that perhaps someday she’ll meet Arthur again. Oddly enough, at some unspecified distance away, Arthur feels the same. They could have had something when they first met but each of their insecurities kept them apart. But after they each do a bit of soul-searching on their own, they will reunite as more-realized people. Arthur reciprocates the hope she’s given to his life by appearing before her. While they may not have all the answers, now that they’re together, they can take on any challenge that comes their way.

What inspired you to write this particular character? -- Gwen

Gwen is another representation of my psyche. Currently, I am a Film Production major with a double minor in Animation and Screenwriting. As it stands, there are many directions I could go but I still don’t exactly know where to start. I love film, I love animation, and I love writing stories but constantly fear that I am not exceptional in any one area. As a result, I make the constant effort to strengthen each facet so I can improve in all areas. There are times where I think that my efforts would be better spent focusing on one aspect at the cost of the others, but my creativity is so erratic and eccentric that I want to express myself however I feel, whenever I want, to the best of my abilities. Gwen is the representation of my fear that I go chasing after too many rabbits that I end up catching nothing.

Who are your characters? -- Gwen

Whereas Arthur is a color-by-numbers kind of guy, Gwen sketches anything and everything. Gwen is fascinated by everything life has to offer, but is afraid to reach out and touch it. There are so many questions she wants to ask, but lacks the confidence to ask them. In the effort to channel her passions, she expresses herself through the controlled medium of art. What she can’t put into words she’ll draw, and to view her artwork is to look into the deepest regions of her soul. There are so many things that she wants to do that she can’t decide on just one, so she ends up squandering her potential by spreading herself thin and lacking guidance. In this world, society deals with absolutes, individuals need clear goals and clear paths to reach them. But Gwen doesn’t think like that. She’s very skittish about what she wants, starting a handful of projects and leaving half of them to start new ones only to abandon them too soon after. She is exactly the kind of individual that doesn’t fit in this world: one who can’t make a definite choice. As such, she’s indifferently rejected by her own inability to make a confident decision.
