Yordles: personal headcanon

I know Riot has recently retconned an entire species, making them spirits instead of a native race. For the sake of this blog’s canon, I will be disregarding this. It doesn’t make sense with much of what was already established in Riot lore.

For instance:

Lulu. If she was a spirit to begin with, why was it so shocking that she never aged, and that she caused mischief by stealing children away? That’s typical spirit behaviour, not atypical.

The over-reliance of yordles on metal, particularly in terms of their weapons and their mechs. Spirits and iron are traditionally incompatible.

Gnar, frozen in ice from prehistoric times, in a physical form.

Their military traditions.

The Mothership.

The list goes on, but that’s just what comes in off the top of my head. As far as I, and this blog’s canon are concerned, yordles are long-lived magically-inclined creatures, a race of sentient and intelligent people who have not only survived in a harsh environment, but thrive there. Yordles are not spirits. Given the nature of the planet and the creatures and beings who live here, it makes sense that yordles are physically real and physically present, but they do possess powers of their own.

In addition to this, this might be a little bit out there, but personally? I headcanon that yordles were the native species on Runeterra, and that the Mothership was how humans came to this planet. That’s right: as a fantasy race, humanity is an invading, non-native species. The gigantic spaceship that is so revered by yordlekind is from their first interaction with a strange race of tall two-leggers. The crash site, over the centuries, became a place of awe, fear, reverence, and lost identity (particularly considering how fast humans breed and adapt the landscape to suit their purpose). The yordles believe it to be their own, due to the tales that have been garbled as they were passed down from generation to generation.
