came across your tumblr while scrolling though new writers community. i wanted to ask how can i get some reach on my blog because i started uploading my pieces online just recently, and i want some attention on it.. any advice would be great. there are already 2 pieces up on my blog, if you could check them out it would mean a lot. again, i am sorry if this is not the correct place to ask becuase i am fairly new to tumblr and still figuring out rules to this app, thank you!
Heyo!
Thanks for the ask.
Going to preface this with saying that I will do my best to be helpful, maybe it will be effective, maybe it won't. The number one thing about gaining reach with a blog, having it blow up, is luck. Unfortunately, you don't really get much of a say in why something does or doesn't gain traction. That said, there are things that you can do to kinda tip scales a bit.
1) Be active. Talk to people, leave comments, engage with the community you want to be a part of. That's how people discover you exist. This is probably the biggest thing
2) Don't be afraid to self-reblog. Sometimes people don't respond to a post because it's not for them, oftentimes people don't respond because they quite literally did not see it.
3) Tag deliberately. Things may have changed on how tags work in the last few years, but when I was learning it, the first 5 tags show up in followed tags, the first 20 (including the aforementioned 5) show up in search results. It used to be that reblogged posts wouldn't show up in search results, but now they do by default. What this means is that if you want to have commentary tags, save those for the end so you're not missing out on stuff that will help people find your work
4) Keeping a relatively stable theme/identity for your blog can help people who want to follow that kind of thing find you. Relatedly, early on is a good time to decide what standard of decorum you want to hold yourself to. Some people are tar pits. Some are kind, and when enforcing boundaries, calm yet firm. In my experience consistently choosing the latter tends to have better results.
5) Be patient. A lot of people will see a blog with only a few posts and wonder if it's worth the follow. When I started this one, it took me probably three or four weeks before I started getting notes that weren't just my existing close friends.
Hopefully, this helps, at least a bit. As for checking out the writing that is posted, I am unfortunately going to have to heed the tags and decline for my own wellbeing. I am sure that they are wonderfully written, but I am not the target audience. That said, I do hope you get the traction you're hoping for.
