He’d only brought him out here because he felt bad for the young redhead. He could sense there was a cloud of doubt that weighed over him. Gaara often kept to himself, so Deidara thought he would do him a favor and ask him to hang out. Everyone around the fire was drinking and mingling, having a good time and making fools of themselves, but not Gaara. The blond paused his conversation with Kisame and worked his way over to the redhead.

It wasn’t every day that Deidara would invite someone from outside his group to hang out, so he didn’t understand why the boy wasn’t making more of an effort to hang out with everyone. “Hey you!” he snuck up behind Gaara “stop feeling so bad for yourself and hang out with us.”

 Gaara knew Deidara from two months of a shared art elective, a schoolwide reputation for snark and tomfoolery, and little else. The rest were upperclassmen; he recognized a fair few from Temari or Kankuro’s years, but could not put a name to one of them. They had devised some sort of drinking game as the night progressed, an increasingly raucous event which involved daring one another closer and closer to the bonfire until their noses singed and their eyebrows all but burned off. Gaara, meanwhile, lingered by one of the plastic chairs at the edge of the fire’s warmth, nursing the rum and coke somebody had put in his hand and feeling altogether quite out of place.

 “I’m not - ”

 Not what? Not feeling sorry for himself? Then what was it? He glanced over at his classmate now, draining a good half of his drink if only to give himself something to do while he pieced together something that resembled a coherent response.

 “I don’t know them very well.”

The sun is setting in the horizon and they have been walking all day instead of flying for the sake of secrecy. Obito, naturally, doesn’t need sleep, so he’s not actually tired. But that will never change the fact that he likes relaxing, and the long walk had him crave for some lazy time. 

“Oi, Deidara-senpai! There’s an inn down the road, it looks like it has a bar...” Tobi points to the building, making a show of hunching his body over with a hand hovering above his eyehole. “Let’s sleep there! You pay!” And with that, he’s off, running towards the inn.
