Tried Sense8 last night, couldn’t get through the first episode. It was far too long, dwelled too much on things and didn’t make me click on episode 2. 

Such a pity, I really wanted to like the show, especially because Kala and Wolfgang.

I’d say a joke - Aussie’s (I’m talking about myself - RC is a NZ AND HE DOESN’T GO HERE!) are pretty ‘dry wit’ for humour. Or cruse (unfortunately). Saying that, it was still stupid cause … well, RC.

(you mean “crude”, right?) I’ve learnt a bit on NZ humour thanks to FotC and Short Poppies, it seems never mean on purpose, so I was pretty confused here. Granted, RC’s wit is as subtle as a full-on haka compared to Jemaine’’s gentle self-deprecating smirks. I’m still amazed by his patience.

and I used to think British humour and banter are freakish... for ppl around the world, Rc is a bit of an AUS emblem, ad the way he is, right?

Here's a random q (if you have the time/interest). I'm watching S1 of Arrow and as a dedicated Felicity/Olicity fan I was surprised at how I didn't have an issue with Laurel/Laurel and Oliver. I keep hearing no chemistry between SA/KC etc. but I'm not seeing a huge warning light for them In your opinion, why do you think they canned the Lauriver plot. Or do you think they've just shelved it? Thanks in advance - I love reading your metas :).

For me, it wasn’t the lack of chemistry between Katie Cassidy and Stephen Amell that was the dealbreaker. I just hated the writing for their relationship. I don’t have a sister, but I can’t imagine even wanting to be in the same room with a guy who cheated on me with even a cousin or a friend and then had a hand in her dying at sea. I love Oliver, but the fiasco with the Queen’s Gambit publicly shamed Laurel so much so that she couldn’t grieve either her boyfriend or her sister properly. I would have respected Laurel if she just completely washed her hands of him. The backstory ruined them before they could actually start on screen, and the lack of explanation of why on earth they would want to be together when they were always either abrasive or penitent together made me not want to root for them. Their lack of chemistry just made it easier for me to want them to give up on the relationship.

I can’t say for sure why they canned the Lauriver plot. I do think that it was a combination of factors.

I wasn’t involved with Arrow back when Season 1 was airing live, but I’ve gathered from other sources that Lauriver failed to generate much buzz. It wasn’t so much that there were hordes of detractors for the relationship gathering outside of CW headquarters with torches and pitchforks calling for an end to the relationship, but that not enough people cared about them when they weren’t on screen. Folks only saw it when it was affecting the narrative in a big way. 

To go Jurassic Park on you: the audience was a Tyrannosaurus rex whose visual acuity was based on movement, and Lauriver wasn’t relevant if it wasn’t moving. 

Even if Laurel and Oliver’s romance had been written the same as Felicity and Oliver’s, the fact that there was little buzz among fans about their relationship would not have boded well for them.

Judging by the progression of the relationship throughout Season 1 as well as the introduction of alternative love interests in Helena and McKenna, I get the impression that the producers were beginning to realize that the epic romance that they’d envisioned on paper for Oliver Queen and Laurel Lance wasn’t translating well on screen. 

The Lauriver problem is actually one that I can relate to after having issues while writing a screenplay for a class once. When writing dialogue, you can mentally fill in the blanks of how you want the actors to perform a scene and the set designers to display the scene and the directors to present the scene…but at the end of the day, the audience will react to the finished product and not the intention behind it. To quote Harrison Ford of George Lucas’ writing in the Star Wars saga: “You can type this shit, but you sure can’t say it.”

I think the final deathblow to the Laurel/Oliver romance was that the producers landed on a better alternative. It’s not because of Olicity that Lauriver withered away and died, but I do think that it’s because Olicity succeeded that Lauriver has been rather conclusively brought to an end. The hero has his lady love. He explicitly confessed his love on multiple occasions. He gazed longingly at her as she was cooing over a baby. His last thought before he died was of their one and only kiss. They shared a bed for the first time only after they had affirmed their feelings for one another. They have their own instrumental theme song. They drove off into the sunset. The point of no return has been passed for Oliver’s Big Love, and Lauriver is not the only romance that cannot be effectively sold for the hero after the third season’s handling of Olicity. Seriously, if the producers don’t have some serious long-term plans for Oliver and Felicity together, they’ve hamstrung themselves for any future romances for Oliver. 

Olicity happened because Lauriver failed; Lauriver did not fail because of Olicity. Other than flashbacks to before the island -  and I’m guessing that even those will be in short supply in the future because all of the bad wigs in the world can’t really sell Stephen Amell as in his early twenties anymore - I don’t think that we’ll see Lauriver romantically again.

Hi! Nice to meet you! I’m sorry for responding to this extremely late, but I’ve been pretty busy / sick. But thank you for sending this! Technically in the first round you *can’t* vote if you’re not a teenager (you have to make an account and put your date of birth), but obviously you can lie and change the date. Now that people have been nominated, it’s easier to vote with tweets (I believe), so I’ll join you in the rebellion and vote like there’s no tomorrow! ;D And yes, I was referring to the Flash finale. I really, REALLY loved it. Barry’s dilemma was to decide if it’s worth changing the past when things have turned out pretty well considering everyone’s circumstances, not to mention is it really his decision to make? Should he wield the power to change everyone’s lives without their permission? I know some people thought Present!Barry not saving his mother was selfish, but clearly there’s a reason why Future!Barry told him to back off. In the end it wasn’t about Barry being selfish and choosing this present timeline, it was about letting his mother die in order to save and protect a thousand more lives. Plus, if Barry did go back in time that could mean another Flash who doesn’t have the same heroic qualities as Barry. It could mean a new Flash who’s actually evil. It could mean a number of things, good or bad, and in the end Barry decided to shoulder it all. One of my favorite quotes comes from Lev Grossman’s The Magician King: “Maybe this was one of those times when being a hero didn’t involve looking particularly brave. It was just doing what you should.” I think Barry did what he had to do because it’s the way it needed to be at that particular moment. Seeing Future!Barry telling Present!Barry to back off only solidified his decision to keep the present timeline intact. And since Barry’s a hero, he’s going to carry that burden for the rest of his life.  I find Barry’s decision incredibly poetic, and goes to show he would never abuse his powers if it meant hurting or changing things for others. If he wasn’t a hero before he certainly is now.  Then there’s Eddie’s death which I LOVED. For the first time in a very long time, a character’s death wasn’t meant to propel anyone’s man / woman pain. Eddie died as a hero, he died for HIMSELF. Unlike Tommy, Shado, Moira and Sara, Eddie died to help save everyone else. It wasn’t about ending the love triangle, it wasn’t about his death being a catalyst for Barry’s crime fighting crusade. It really was about Eddie. He was always going to be second best to Joe, to Barry, hell even to the rest of the world. But killing himself to protect the ones he loves? That’s nothing short of heroic, and he reclaimed the idea an average Joe can be just as important as someone like Barry. I thought his death was beautiful, and if I want a character to die I want it to end like Eddie’s. It was perfect.  Plus I just think Flash, in terms of writing and characterizations, is doing a far better job than Arrow but that’s a separate post.   #AmiSTalkingYAll, #Blondewhirlwind, #TheFlashCw
