Bloodlines Character Picrew Party!

@missn11​ and I had way too much fun using that popular picrew to create VTMB characters. Let us show you what we made!

(the ones in this post were all made by me)

First the Camarilla Crew: LaCroix, Strauss and Mercurio.

Then the Anarchs, featuring seductive Abrams and Nine’s coterie :P

And last but certainly not least, everyone’s favorite snarky journal-keeper, Beckett.

I started this comic like MONTHS ago before promptly forgetting about it in its entirity. I don’t think I have the energy to clean it up more than this but I friend told me I should post it anyway.

for the character meme, how about Beckett?

How I feel about this character: What a dude. What a man. What a fantastic flagship character for the franchise. I have enjoyed his appearance in basically everything I’ve ever witnessed him in: primarily Bloodlines, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary and that one time Matt Mercer played him in a podcast (Vancouver by Night,) and I have also enjoyed seeing excerpts of his shenanigans from other books discussed here on tumblr. He is a sassy, bisexual king, sometimes chaotic dumbass and I am here for every second of it.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Our boy Beckett’s got a list of suitors a mile long, as discussed in this post: 

I once read a fic featuring Beckett shipped with ace!Anatole (by @badass-at-fandoming) and it was very cute and sweet. I have actually read very little material with Anatole in it so this was basically my introduction to him. 

And I keep inching ever closer to it in Beckett’s Diary, but I really want to see the exact nature of Beckett and Vykos’ relationship. Depending on what I think Beckett and Vykos could fit here or in the next category. 

In my opinion the ideal ship for Beckett is either someone he can slow down and be soft with for once in his busy, hectic and often dangerous life, or, someone who can keep up with that dangerous pace, and match him or even challenge him on the field of wits and intellectualism. Or both.  My non-romantic OTP for this character: I haven’t personally seen any shippy content between Lucita and Beckett so I enjoy thinking of them as best buds who can and often do drive each other crazy.  I keep threatening to write a fic in which Beckett and Pisha have an intellectual discussion with each other, because I think they each would delight in picking the other’s brain, but I also can’t help but think they’d probably try to kill each other at some point too.  

My unpopular opinion about this character: I have read his aesthetic described as everything from “unfashionable” or “frumpy oxford professor” to “hippie Indiana Jones” y’all can go stick your smelly opinions in the trash because I happen to like this man’s weirdo aesthetic. The long hair, this circular sunglasses (NGL I own a pair myself :P) the linen shirt, the vambraces, the longcoat. Its a LOOK and *I* for one, like it a lot.  One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That aforementioned meeting with Pisha.  Thanks for the ask @community-tomatoes!

How I feel about this character:

I adore this ridiculous disaster of a man with all my heart!

He is my favorite Bloodlines character. I just really enjoy his personality, and think his voice actor does an absolutely fantastic job bringing that patrician snootiness to the forefront, while also playing him as a reasonable, level headed leader, until he’s not anymore, and he’s a desperate, conniving man one step off the deep end. The fact that he’s just kind of universally scorned, even by his own people (his own bloodbonded ghoul hardly even gives a shit about him XD), and the incredible pressure that must put on him behind the scenes and how that might contribute to his motivations is also fascinating as hell. 

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

I will go down with the LaCroix/Nines ship like the Titanic. Its just got such fantastic ‘opposites attract’ energy, what with it representing Ventrue/Brujah, Camarilla/Anarch, Upperclass/Working Class, social-power/physical-power, etc. I’m, uh... writing a fic about it...

I have also been enlightened to the ways of LaCroix/Ming Xiao thanks primarily to @missn11 and her deep dive fanfic into the pairing. Two smooth-talking villainous backstabbing snakes, perfect for each other! 

Not to mention the triumvirate power throuple of LaCroix/Ming Xiao/Nines, also a brainchild of @missn11. I really enjoy that throuple either serious (the high stakes political intrigue!) or cute/cracky (Movie night! Texting each other distracting photos when the other is in an important meeting!) 

I have also been known to enjoy LaCroix/Sheriff and LaCroix/Fledgling when presented to me. 

And then, ya know, being here on vampblr, Nick/LaCroix is cute as frickin’ hell. Seeing @princelacroix and @normaltremere  ‘s RP shenanigans before and after their marriage (so cute) has been one of the highlights of my tumblr experience for the last however many months they’ve been at it. Everything from dorky couples’ bickering to genuine odes of affection that warm my undead heart. So yeah. Thanks guys! 

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

Well LaCroix’s getting busy with the plethora of people I pair him with, he’s really got no one else available for this spot! XD 

My unpopular opinion about this character:

I still don’t get what LaCroix’s rationale was behind his consecutive backstabbing towards the end of the game. Don’t get me wrong, it made for some of the best emotional video game role playing experiences in my life. I can get along with it with a base understanding of “he was going off the deep end by that point, he wasn’t being rational,” and just handwave my concerns with that, but if I actually try to logic it out, what he was trying to do makes absolutely no sense, and it does kind of bother me.  

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

On one had I wish that other VTM media remembered and embraced LaCroix (say, like Nines was) but then I remember the one time V5 remembered LaCroix existed, it decided to take a potshot at his masculinity, so maybe it is for the best he’s a character not often mentioned in other material...

My more measured response to LaCroix’s lack of inclusion in new material is, of course he’s not mentioned, since he’s dead after 2004 and most new material isn’t taking place during a time when he was alive. Still, should they release a new story or somesuch taking place before 2004 and they throw in a LaCroix cameo or actually feature him to some degree, I would absolutely squeal with delight and get my hands on that story as quick as I could.

The VTM:B Kindred in order of "youngest” to “oldest”

In case anybody would find it interesting, here’s a list of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines Kindred characters organized by how long its been since they were Embraced. (Note: The game takes place in 2004 and dates are calculated from that). 

Youngest to Oldest

You (obviously) Embraced October 2004

Imalia - 1 year (embraced 2003)

Mitnick - less than 7 years* (see reasoning below) 

Ash - 7 years (embraced 1997)

Skelter - less than 35 years (embraced shortly after Vietnam war)

Gary - ~44 years (embraced circa 1960)

Damsel 50+/- years* (see reasoning below) 

Nines - 55 years (embraced 1949)

Therese and Jeanette 160+/- years* (see reasoning below)

LaCroix - 189 years  (embraced 1815)

Beckett - ~300 years (embraced circa 1704)

Smiling Jack - 350 years (embraced 1654)

I couldn’t find anything concrete for the ages of Abrams, the Sheriff, Betram, Velvet, or Andrei.

Pretty much all this info came from the VTMB wiki or the WhiteWolf wiki and lots of them did just have official Embrace dates but some of them I had to puzzle out myself. More info on my reasoning under the cut:

Mitnick: The official “first non-Nosferatu to hack the SchreckNet” was Bobby Weatherbottom (a Ventrue, God, what a name for a Ventrue...) who did it in the late 1990′s. So that means that Mitnick was not the first non-Nosferatu to hack the SchreckNet (he was Embraced Nosferatu *because* he hacked the SchreckNet) so he had to have been embraced after Weatherbottom did it, ie “after the late ‘90s” which I counted here as “after 1997″.   

I would guess that Damsel was embraced in the 50′s or shortly thereafter. I’m pretty confident she was at least an adult (human or Kindred) during the Cuban Revolution which she indirectly but passionately references, which I take to mean she was around when it was happening. 

Therese and Jeanette’s “last sunrise [being] over two lifetimes ago” would I guess put them at something like 160 years embraced give or take like 30 years in either direction, but that’s sort of a wishy washy number.

Strauss was present at the Convention of Thorns (according to LA by Night, which I’m pretty sure is basically canon since the Storyteller is a WhiteWolf staff member) which took place in 1493, but, given that he probably was there as someone of consequence he was probably a very well-established Kindred at that time so you could possibly add a couple hundred years to his age.

For the "give me a character" ask game Nines ^_^

How I feel about this character: My second favorite Bloodlines character (after LaCroix). He’s just got a lot of mystique built up around him as this legendary Anarch figure and surprisingly softspoken (but no less fiery) Brujah. He is also in particular one of my favorite characters to write and read in fandom because I think there are so many interesting ways to take his character. One of the most brilliant things about VTMB’s character writing is that they are purposefully just a little vague, so it makes them so easy and so rewarding to slip into their headspaces and theorize and write from their perspectives, filling in the holes as you go, and Nines is no exception.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Oh boy, Nines/LaCroix! I went into this in a bit more depth in my ask about LaCroix, basically, they are very hardcore ‘opposites attract’ and I am here and a half for it. 

In my opinion, I think the ideal ship for Nines is someone who *can* fend for themself, but also someone who Nines can look out for and/or spoil with affection. I don’t picture Nines being very publicly affectionate, unless its a teasing verbal jab here or there, but much less reserved behind closed doors.    My non-romantic OTP for this character: I very much enjoy seeing Nines in a mentor role towards Annabelle in LA by Night. Their big-Brujah, baby-Brujah dynamic is very sweet and displays a nice evolution of Nines’ character.

Can’t forget the OG trio too, Nines’ coterie. We actually don’t get to see a whole lot of them interacting, though a decent amount of them talking about each other. From what’s presented though its just very easy and natural to slot them together as a close knit group and I enjoy seeing them together and writing them myself in fandom. 

My unpopular opinion about this character: I feel that his unwillingness to assume leadership of the Anarchs has gotten dragged out a little too much depending on the source, to the point of making him look indecisive and wishy-washy. At some point, dude’s gotta stop dragging his feet and just commit to some course of action instead of impotently angsting about it. 

I actually don’t really enjoy overly aggressive or taciturn portrayals of Nines in fandom. Maybe he has a hardened exterior, but I most enjoy seeing a Nines who has hidden depths of compassion and gentleness. TLDR; I want soft Nines, give me soft Nines! One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: He had way too little screen time in Bloodlines, but I am glad that he’s now featured prominently in LA by Night, and was remembered in Beckett’s Jyhad Diary, where he was presented as one of the key power players of the LA setting.  Thanks for the ask, @missn11!

Since the little Bloodlines comic I posted the other day went over well I decided to post more of my Bloodlines art. This is from a set I did in March where I was wanting to draw characters who are maybe not drawn as much (so like, not Nines or LaCroix lol). 

Bloodlines is actually a really good source to draw inspiration from if you like doing (semi-)realism of characters who are not necessarily all “pretty” and have strong features that give them a lot of character (and that’s exactly what I’m all about in my art right now.) 

For its wonkiness, I actually really enjoy how Abrams turned out. Just ended up being a really good study because of the head-tilt and the wrinkles and jowls and the #ToreadorDisgust expression. But with Romero looking cocky, Ming Xiao looking haughty and Vandal looking like he hasn’t slept in 11 days, I’m pretty happy with all of them.
