When an outburst in the king's council lands him in hot water, Adrien must delve into the flip side of being an interrotator, who works alone and become a soldier.

“Yes,” Bay clipped out. “I am. I do not have to want for anything anymore and you being here only reminds of everything I lost. I look at you and I see the family I was taken from. I look at you and I see years I could have spent with my own kind. I look at you and I see everything that was stolen from me.”

“Okay,” Connie said, softly. “Okay, Bay. We’ll go. I am sorry for the trouble I have caused you.”

Sammi’s head snapped to her sister, face utterly shocked. “Are you serious?”

Connie looked at her. “Yes,” she said. “We’re going. Bay’s right. We should never have come.”

Connie turned around and went back to her chair, her legs folded beneath her as she put her hands in her lap and stared back at the fire.

Sammi’s face twisted and she shoved Bay backwards with her magic. His back slammed into the wall, his shoulder cracking, as her fingers shook, gripping his throat with the swirling white light. “You are an ungrateful bastard,” she seethed. “You-”

The two guards swarmed into the room and Sammi flung out a hand, shoving one of the guards back but the other was ready, his forearm thrown up as he shielded against the power and he nearly had his sword at Sammi’s throat when Bay choked out, “Don’t.”

Tears of rage sung in Sammi’s eyes, her face harsh.

“You will,” MIchael said, catching Bay’s chin between his bony fingers. “You will because that is what you are here for. I will not risk twenty years of plans for an obdurate child’s wishes. If you wish for an incentive,” Michael purred, “I can have those girls you love brought here.”

Bay’s face went near feral.

The room darkened further, the windows cracked and shattered. Nate barely threw his magic up to stop the glass from slicing his skin. Jolts of black lightning slithered down Bay’s arms, searing the material of his shirt

The fabric fell away, showing the plane of Bay’s sculpted back. Nate’s heart froze over at the scars stretching across Bay’s back and he stared at the dark brown and umber and golden wings that appeared.

Holy gods.
