15 years ago, the Knife of Dunwall parted ways with both his knife, and Dunwall. He was never seen again.
15 years ago, he swore not to kill a living soul, to leave the world and disappear from the lives of all people. And do he did. Daud returned to Serkonos, he found uncharted land and made it his home.
For 15 years, he did not talk to anyone. Even his old friend, the one with the black eyes, stopped showing in his dreams.
Until one night, it all changed.
When he woke up in the middle of the night, he knew, he knew something has shifted. And so, without a choice, he walked the path of the void, and for the first time in 15 years, he saw the Outsider.
Daud, old friend. You’ve aged. The black eyed bastard noted, and Daud just stared back, bottomless black stones to hollow pale ones.
I’m here because you were not enough. 15 years ago you trapped Delilah in the void, and left forever, to a void of your own. But now, will you leave your void, just as she left hers?
“Left hers?” His voice came out so ragged, so unused.
Yes, Daud. I don’t play favorites, and so I am letting you in on a secret; you might have saved the child Empress. But what will you do for the woman she became?
And just like that, Daud woke up.
The morning, Daud found himself looking at the mirror. He frowned. His black hair was laced with silver, and his crow feet near the eyes deepened. He looked old.
Exactly fifteen years ago, he stabbed an Empress and kidnapped her little girl, now what was left of him? Of her?
And so, he packed his things, and left his home.
This was a mystery, and Daud could not leave a mystery unsolved.
When Daud reached Karnaca, and saw civilization for the first time in 15 years, it was hectic. The situtation was chaotic. News of Emily Kaldwin on the run, and her so-called Aunt taking over the Empire reached the edge of the world.
He knew it was only a matter of time before he would find the former Empress in Karnaca.
Daud was somewhat relieved to have found out he did not lose his touch. He could still run around and climb and sneak and disappear and disarm anyone in his way. He did notice, however, his bones ached inside his body. His years were getting to him, but he was faster.
Away from the eye, Daud stayed on roofs, watching the street, until he would catch wind of her. He knew she would come.
When he found unconscious bodies lying around, it did not take the Knife a long time to follow the trail to Emily.
And there she was. A tall woman, hiding her face, armored. He watched from above as she moved unseen, disarming one enemy and then another. Daud followed her around Karnaca.
She was Corvo’s daughter.
It took him a while to figure out, but once he did, it was all so clear to him. She was tracing the steps Delilah did, finding out clues and solving the mystery.
Daud managed to track her going on a skiff, and then on a ship. From there it became easy to keep track of her movement and missions.
When Emily Kaldwin went to the Clockwork Mansion, Daud understood she was giving a visit to important figures who helped in the forming of the coup. He knew she would soon be going for not other than the Duke himself.
And when she will go there... He will be there, not watching, but helping. After all, who was better than him at killing rulers?
The question of why he wanted to help so badly stayed unanswered, although his old friend the Outsider had his assumptions.
You failed her, you still feel guilt over it, you blame yourself, you hate Delilah...
Daud hated the fact the Outsider was always right.
And so he stayed, away from the eye, but never too far.
