After a weekend of indulgence and shopping, in the United States, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has earned the designation of Giving Tuesday.

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?

We have a day for giving thanks. We have four for excessive shopping. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

In that spirit, I’d like to extend a gentle reminder that we have several active charity drives running right now, all for worthwhile charities that could use a helping hand, especially during the busy holiday season, when giving tends to decline.

LOUIS’ DRIVE 

Louis supports so many charities, it’s often hard to decide which one to support for the annual drive. This year’s choice is Stand Up To Cancer.

There are also 2 other drives associated with Louis - 

in 2016, the Tomlinson family, and the fandom, lost a guiding light when Louis’ mum Jay passed away. In her memory, we have an ongoing drive to benefit Bloodwise, a a UK based charity dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as to offering information and support to blood cancer patients. Bloodwise's vision is to beat blood cancer.

Sadly, tragedy visited the Tomlinson family again in early 2019, with the passing of his younger sister Felicite’, affectionately known as Fizzy. In her memory, we have an ongoing drive to benefit The Good Grief Trust - a UK based bereavement support program.

HARRY’S DRIVE

This year, we’re returning to Drop4Drop for Harry’s drive. Drop4Drop believes that everyone, everywhere, has the right to clean water. We are raising money for this charity to celebrate Harry’s birthday and are working towards providing an entire community with a sustainable source of clean drinking water.

In addition to Drop4Drop, we also have an ongoing drive for Stand Up to Cancer in memory of Harry’s stepfather, Robin Twist, who passed away from cancer in 2017.

LIAM’S DRIVE

Our chosen charity for Liam’s drive is once again The Way Youth Zone, a children’s activity center based right in his hometown of Wolverhampton.The Way offers youths and teens a safe, inclusive, diverse, and affordable place to go in their leisure time. Due to a generous donation from Liam himself, we achieved our 2017 fundraising goal and followed that up with reaching goal again in 2018 and 2019!

It’s never too late to get a start on next year’s goal, though, and in that light we’ve already established his drive for 2020.

Niall’s drive for 2020  has yet to be established, however donations can still be made to this year’s drive to benefit Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens, a cause he’s supported through his Horan and Rose Charity Golf event.

MPC Event

The MPC gala was live-streamed. Those of us “Peakers” not in attendance had a lovely time messaging on Facebook as we watched. There are about 1500 My Peak Challenge members from 80+ countries attending the MPC Gathering this weekend.  The Edinburgh International Conference Center, where the gala is being held, is the largest such venue in Scotland and can accommodate 2000 guests. So the MPC event is definitely a boon to not only the Conference Center, but the Scottish economy too, as evidenced by the video message sent by Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party, and the in-person welcome given by Christina McKelvie, Cabinet Minister.

It is a beautiful thing to be able to witness the growth of MPC over the last 5 years. For me, being part of MPC is an opportunity to contribute to a charity (Bloodwise) which funds research for a disease from which I am in remission -Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Equally as important, I treasure coming to know so many people who have found their way back to health and fitness. I share these stories with the blessing of some of my MPC friends: the mother who was finally able to get into the amusement park rides with her children after losing 100#, the “senior” Peaker who was nearly homebound because of obesity and has now lost weight and regained her mobility as well as the ability to work in her garden, and the young mother who can once again sit on the floor and play with her children - something she hasn’t been able to do for 10 years. 

I have recommended MPC to so many people because it works. It is inexpensive, high quality, and accessible. I research and recommend health behavior modification programs because of the work I do. There are other high quality programs available and MPC is not for everyone. But it has made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people all over the world. 

I am grateful to Sam and the team he has put together. And just for the record, MPC has never claimed to be a charity. MPC is a social enterprise which provides a program for nutrition and fitness, as well as donating to three charities: Bloodwise, Marie Curie Hospice, and Cahonas Scotland. MPC and organizations like it contribute to the common good. I hope we all continue to contribute to the common good in many and varied ways. Humankind depends on significant numbers of people making a commitment for the long haul to improving the lives of others. Sam is doing that via MPC.
