YEW: What was your most recent experience with a spirit?

I hate to disappoint, but this is not very exciting. I spent a day or so with that weird someone’s-over-my-should feeling, and I got annoyed and threw some pinches of Ghost-Be-Gone powder around the place. And Penny ran around with me with her tail swishing all fierce and poofy. That pretty much got rid of it.

MISTLETOE:What holiday, festival, sabbat or season is most important to you? 

There are a few holidays that I make a point of celebrating - Imbolc, Lughnasadh, Harvest Home, Samhain, and Yule. Imbolc is probably the most important to me, spiritually speaking. Brighid is my main patron and she was my first. For the past few years, I’ve performed a dawn devotional on Imbolc with music and candles and offerings for her.

The season between Harvest Home and Samhain is pretty much one long extended witchy holiday for me. Autumn is my favorite season, and I love the harvest holidays. (For a long time, I celebrated the September harvest as Mabon because that was the familiar term, but I’m not Wiccan and there’s a whole religious context to Mabon that I don’t work with, so I started calling it Harvest Home instead, which is the colonial name for the second harvest.)

DRAGON’SBLOOD: What physical object means more to you than any other? Why?

Probably my laptop. It has my life’s work on it at this point, between book manuscripts and bill information and suchlike. I have backups for emergencies, but I’d be very upset if I lost the computer.

More than anything through, it’s Havoc and Penny. I know they’re not technically objects, but I would let literally everything I own burn if it meant I could save them.

King of Swords

The card depicts a king sitting on a throne made of dark stone with wolves carved into the armrests. A wolf sits at their feet. The king holds a golden sword upright and towards the sky. They look stern and have a long white beard. 

This is a card of authority and self-serving interests. For any upcoming problems, best way to prepare is to make sure you are taking care of yourself first-and-foremost. And make sure you are in charge of whatever you can be in charge of. If you’re the authority on your life, then it will be hard for others to impose their rule on you.

I pulled three cards for you from the Justice League Tarot: The Tower, Eight of Pentacles, and King of Pentacles.

The Tower depicts The Joker (from Batman) snapping his fingers and Gotham exploding. Eight of Pentacles depicts Batgirl swinging through the night skies of Gotham. Lastly, King of Pentacles depicts Ozymandius from the Watchman sitting with a large cat next to him with a tentacle monster in the background.

I see this as a progression. You are starting with The Tower, which could refer to your current situation, a situation you just encountered, or a situation you will soon encounter. The Tower is about ruin, destruction, and chaos. Something bad happened (or is happening, will happen) that is going to uproot you in a way you aren’t expecting. You may feel lost and helpless.

But there’s hope! There’s Batgirl, swinging her energy into your life. You will be able to pick up the pieces and further yourself with your hobby, career, or skills. You will triumph over the Tower’s influence to rebuilding yourself and your surroundings. (The Joker tried to ruin Batgirl once before, but she arose as The Oracle. Nothing stops her.) There will be progress you can make from the ruin. You’ll rebuild something stronger.

You’ll rebuild to the King of Pentacles. This card is a bit weird, as I’m not terribly familiar with Watchman and thus don’t know Ozymandius very much. But this card is traditional the epitome of material security, and so I think this is pointing to your own ability to control your material environment. You’ll be back at full-strength, despite the Tower crumbling your life.

This may translate into something like: You lose a job, you work hard to find a new job, your new job is better than your old job. Something like that, but apply it to what makes sense in your life.

thank you!!! this makes a ton of sense to me. ive recently had an interest in shadow work and ive been pondering about what religion suits me best for a few days now. plus, ive been trying my hand at magic and such more and planning to do more for now on, so having this card drawn is awesome! thanks :)

Unicorn

The card shows us a unicorn in the rain with a colorful full moon behind them.

Part of me wants to say that rare stuff is going to happen the rest of the month. I’m reminded of how I use the phrase, “As common as a unicorn!” for things. So if you’re hoping to get a new job, that better promotion, making time with a friend you never can see, etc... It’s all possible in May!

The card’s actual meaning is about seeking deeper questions. Thinking the deep stuff, especially in regards to spirituality. And these deeper questions don’t necessarily need answers, just things to think about. And sometimes, just asking the question brings forth its own insights.

Which is key: insights. I see a lot of new insights coming to you this month from your willingness to question things.

Also, if you’re religious or spiritual at all, this card is about connecting to a Higher Power of some sort. If you have been feeling blah about your religious or spiritual practice, it’s likely you’ll find a way to reconnect this month.
