Starcrossed: Chapter 2

Leo elbows open the door to the studio, duffel full of his gym stuff in one hand, coffee flask in the other, and the day’s mail tucked in his mouth, only slightly crinkled from his small tusks. His boss, Birdie Dawson, turns at the sound, the lines near her eyes crinkling as she sees him. She’s been good to him, kept him employed and reporters at bay. Though human, her lack of bias against hurokin such as himself is refreshing.

In his years away from the melting pot that is Valle de Robles in the centre of the California Republic, with all its glamour and pageantry, he’s encountered more unsettling stereotypes and speciesism than he’d care to think about. His relocation to northern Cascadia had been to get away from the expectations placed upon him by both family and media, but it merely exchanged one set of problems for another.

For one, he shouldn’t be having money troubles. He hadn’t been entirely certain of his finances back when he was still on the circuit, his uncle had handled that for him, but he knows enough now to resent Tío Mateo withholding his earnings. Birdie had suggested he sue, but you didn’t do that to family. Well, he didn’t, anyway...
