The Disrobing of Christ (El Expolio)
Artist: El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) (workshop of) (Greek, 1541-1614)
Date: ca. 1579–1580
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungary
Description
This rarely depicted scene, originating from the Apocrypha, records the dramatic moment before the Crucifixion, when Christ is disrobed by a henchman. The work, produced for the sacristy in the Cathedral of Toledo, is one of El Greco’s most original inventions. The composition did not find favour with the church prelates, who were displeased that the mob was placed so prominently above Christ’s head. Nevertheless, the large, multi-figural original was a remarkable success, as testified by the large number of replicas, copies and variants that it generated.
