Missions Trip: Day #1
So I just got back from missions trip with Team BK (Blue Knob, Burger King, whatever) and I'm trying to collect my thoughts. To start off, Team BK was composed of 8 people ( me, Ian, Nathan, Vivian, Eric, Jason, Alice, and Marsha) and we picked up one BKer along the way, Stacy, who was our leader affiliated with TEAM EFFORT (the organization behind the missions trip). Honestly, my thoughts are clouded right now, but with God's help I can form them into coherent water droplets of awesomeness which will rain and produce fruit.
I actually kept a diary, *ahem* I mean a man journal with me on the missions trip so half of the stuff I write on here was written on that day and half of it will be added in. I'm going to be posting a new diary every day for each day of the mission trip that I can remember. I suggest that if you start reading this, you should finish so you can see the big ginormous picture.
So before I go off on my super long bunch of posts I just want to say that it was a blessing to have gone on this missionary trip with everyone on the BK team (yes, all other 8 people), we did a lot of group bonding, which was one of my favorite parts. I learned so much about others who I've been going to SWAT, and was able to appreciate their personalities because they opened themselves up. I'm also thankful that we had no major accidents and were able to serve to the people we did.
SO HERE WE GO... (btw, originally I did not have a diary for each day since I didn't start journaling until the second full day of the trip)
DAY 1: Sunday, July 1st, 2012
So I'm writing this on the spot since I didn't make a diary that day. So I spent the night before July 1st preparing for the whole shenanigan trip. The day before July 1st I went to this huge outlet mall to get some shorts and shoes and sunglasses, because I wanted to look "cool" on the trip. I guess that shows my obsession with looking good, its a theme that will manifest itself more through my later diaries, its a theme with a positive ending (yay!). So anyway on the actual day I woke up at around 8ish to be ready to go to church at 9:30 and meet up with Team BK before the Sunday Service. I was all packed and prepared, however, stuff happened and my mom and I didn't actually get to church until 10:10ish or so. So once we got to church, I unpacked my things, saw Nathan, and then he brought me to the van, a greyish used van, ahhh most of our trip memories are on that van. Anyway, I put my stuff on the van, and then realized that I forgot the notarized form at home. But before I continue any further, I just want to comment that seeing Nathan was a little awkward, not because of Nathan, but more because I came late and for some reason when I'm around my mom with other people things tend to get awkward. Anyway, my mom and I get back to the car and then go home to get the form. On the car ride home my mom lectured me about being forgetful, which is understandable and something that I totally foresaw. I went back home, got the form, and then we went back to church. Arriving at church was also a bit awkward because I was the last one there. I went into the church but saw no one from the missions trip, so using my intellectual brain, I figured that everyone was in the SWAT room (which is where our youth group meets). Lo and behold when I arrive at the SWAT room, everyone is there! Okay so I sit down near the door, we pray, and then I hand in my notary Vivian who gives it to Nathan. The stuff I have talked about is pretty irrelevant so lets fast forward a bit.
After meeting in the SWAT room, we go to the English Hall in the main church building for Sunday service, where the missions trip will be sent off formally by the church members. So after Pastor Jeff preaches about have dependence on God, not independence of God, we are sent out, and the missions team is called to the podium. Looking back, this moment was the first moment where we were called together as a team, which is pretty significant stuff ya know. We get formally sent off on the trip and then we head off, or at least that's what we planned to do.
After changing into our TEAM BK shirts (which Ian made), we find out that Alice lost her phone, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but then stuff happens and it seems like a big deal (not going to list the minutiae of the situation). But we spend a good half hour searching for it, but no luck, so we admit the phone's death and we move on, almost positive that someone stole it. We are informally sent off by Pastor Jeff and a few others, I say goodbye to my mom, and then we leave on the trip. OFF WE GO!
okay I'm suffering from the most missionary depression so far right now so I'm going to listen to Everybody Talks by Neon Trees, one of the songs we singed on the van and made inside jokes to. BRB.
Okay, I just came back, it didn't help much. And I'm super depressed, confused, tired right now. So I think I'm giong to go to sleep and wake up super early and continue this. Geeesh haha can't even get past day 1 of this blog. Okay nevermind, I'm going to finish this blog so I can get something out. I'm thinking a little clearer after I just broke down emotionally, I started crying due to lots of things and its good to have those times to just ease off burdens and stuff. You'll hear me talking about that for another blog day. So stay tuned, you'll get to see my emotional manly side haha, that'll be the finale! lol haha I'm acting like someone is actually reading this. OKAYYYY so continuing where I left off on that day...
So on the ride there, Eric tells his first joke, which is a huge landmark in retrospect, because during the course of the trip Eric hands down made his name in joke history, he created a new type of trade mark jokes which were the awesomeness and the best in the whole universe. Since I vlogged the trip, I'll post up a video of his trademark joke. But yeah, we begin to come together as a team in the van. BTW Ian (our pastor) isn't with us because he's at a wedding or at a retreat or at something else. He's planned to meet with us the next day at the train station. ANYWAY, so we stop at a rest stop and go to this place whose name I forgot, and then we get on the road, after another 3 hours I'd say, we get to Blue Knob. And we are met with members from TEAMEFFORT who have been expecting us. It's at this point that we first see Stacy and I remember her lifting Jason's bag harhar. Okayyy so then comes going into the condos which we are staying at.
After getting our keys, we're super excited, we go back into the van to get all of our luggage and then we go down some hallways, turn a poorly engineered door, climb a flight of stairways that agreeably smells like China and Taiwan, and then get to our rooms. The guy room is number 1231 and the girls room is number 1229, in between there are some other people living there. Also, the place we're staying at is supposed to be a ski resort, but because in the summer time, no one goes up there, its nice and quiet and tranquil and cheap I too guess to rent out a condo. When we open the door, we are met with stagnant and heated air which has been in the room since who knows when, there are a bunch of mosquitos and it overall feels super duper icky and uncomfortable. However, we get our stuff settled, meet with the girls, and then go up the mountain to the chapel, where we meet other groups, worship, receive the message, and then travel back to our cabins. Everyone has mixed opinions because it seems like most of the other groups are superficial in their reason for being at the missions trip and it seems more like a party than a chapel.
Anyway, once we get "home" we have our first debriefing session. And here we spill a lot of our beans and get to be close to one another. Then we go to sleep, and I remember not being able to go to sleep for hours haha.
See you tomorrow.
