Echium Pininana (Blue Steeple) | Devil’s Slide Trail | 35mm
I've decided that my story idea "Blue Steeple" should be full southern gothic so I'm changing my animal companion/secret monster villain form an ant eater to a blue jay. This evil little man fits a lot better now :)
So, now that I have shown you a few well-known haunts, why don't I talk about a less-known one?
This location was suggested to me by a person who grew up in Lakeport, California and knew the story behind this place.
It's called the "Blue Steeple" to those who live there. To others it had been dumbed down to the ordinary "Old Christian Church". It was built in the 1800's, and has been a pillar to Lakeport since it's construction.
The ghost's identity is known; many call him One-Armed Elijah. Why one-armed? In the a 1950's, a man who was working on the interior of the building had an unfortunate accident. Some unruly teenagers tried to play a prank on him by disabling the safety on his saw. It wasn't a very good prank, because this resulted in his arm being sawed off which led to poor Elijah bleeding to death.
It is said that Elijah still haunts the place today and does not welcome change. The person that suggested this haunt to me told me that a man died in the Steeple as he was painting it. I was able to confirm this with research. My informer said that the way he died it couldn't have been an accident. It was like the latter was pushed. On further investigation, the autopsy stated that the man was dead before he even hit the ground and died of 'unknown causes'.
Spooky huh?
Funny thing is all the sources say the man died in 1968, when I know for a fact it was 1978. My informer was born in 1968, and he was ten when the incident took place. So all the information on the man's death is wrong, because I have a credible eye-witness who was at the scene.
My guess as to the reason of the man's death would be that he tried to change the church. Many ghosts grow attached to buildings as a way to keep them from moving on, so needless to say One-Armed Elijah probably grew really attached to the Blue Steeple. Many owners of the steeple claimed that they would get a lot of resistance when they tried to hang a painting, or something of the sort. One owner even claimed to have been lifted off the ground where he hovered, then was tossed down a flight of stairs!
A lake port resident said that once the church sold it, the place became a palm reading/hemming business. She had some of her clothes hemmed there and asked if it was a good place for a business. The woman replied, "Sure, if they would stop talking."
Today the Steeple is a vacation rental, so it has gone through MANY changes. I can't imagine Elijiah is happy about that, either, considering his past tantrums. Either the connection to this world was blurred when the Steeple was changed and he moved on, or the renters will have a very very grouchy ghost on their hands.
