bI’m doing this as an aswer to boxes-and-cubes survey thingie. If you think you have a story to tell too go to her page and read her first post :3
So I’ll start by the fact that I am a 22 years old woman girl and that I still live with my parents. My parents are quite open minded but not as much as any child would like to. Like they despise tattoos, piercings (unless the 2 normal on the ears) and ‘weird’ colors on hair or ‘weird’/’extreme’ haircuts. Like I come home with a blue mohawk and I’m either dead or thrown out of the house to fend for myself.
Also my mother frets that too much coloring your hair and they will fall off (even though she is dying hers all her life).
Now lets me tell you that most of my friends or people I know, people my age had started dying their hair, or just high lights from like 2nd year of middle school. I wasn’t really that jealous because my natural hair are dark brown with red highlights when under the sun. Which is quite cool all on it’s own. But after like reaching my highschool 2nd year I was starting to get bored of my color hair.
My mom of course would not let me dye them so I started with plum highlights here and there. Of course the fact that my mom was the one who paid for it had something to do with it too. It was nice for about 2 years. I was still quite bored of my natural hair color.
I’m 2 years into college and I have fell in love with the ombre style because tumblr. I’m trying to convice my mom that it will look good on me and that she should let me do it. I would only bleach my edges so my hair would not fall off as she was fretting and if ombre really was not my style I could just cut them off. It didn’t go well at anytime we were discusing it. She would constantly shout how much of a clown I would be and how much of an embarassment I would make of myself. So I stopped talking about it.
It’s summer of that 2nd year in college and I was invited by a friend to go vacation with her at her home island. And I go! My friend has a friend that is a hairstylist for a living and she would make me a good price for her to do my hair. Yup, I went and did it behind my mom’s back. I did it and after my vacations were over I came back home.
My mom actually loved my red ombre hair. She L-O-V-E-D it!
I didn’t even try to tell her how wrong she was before and how she should apologise, I had won and I had won twice because now my ass-long hair were omber red just like I wanted them (not my boring natural color anymore) and she even loved them.
But red is a color that doesn’t last long. And eventually in left and even though I renewed many times it still would leave. And then came the time that mom hated my ass-long hair and made me cut off my bleached oranged edges.
Now I was again with my normal hair, which I died red here and there but with no bleach, you couldn’t really tell the difference unless under the sun.
Two more years went by and I’m in my 1st year of college in another college degree.
Had a hair cut somewhere in december. Sortly cut from the left side and rather cheek-long from the right. But color as natural as ever, with only 2-3 red highlights. I decide to wait for it to get long again and eventually I cut both sides the same size.
Now I have a cleopatra style (minus the bangs [god I hate bangs] ) and still my natural hair color.
I was bored of it so i decided to bleached it whole and try make it copper red.
I bought everything I needed and went to a friend to help me because she has dyed her hair many times and she knows how to bleach better than me. Thank you for that onnie! :3
And we do it.
My hair aint as copper red as I wanted them but they are still a nice red color that I like and looks good on me.
What I’m trying to say is.. I dye my hair not because out of fashion or jealousy because someone else did it. I dye it when I feel I need a change on me, something to make me feel even a bit refreshed and nice about myself.
I love my hair and there are one of the few parts of me that give me a smile on my face. When they are how I want them to be natural color or not I feel even a little better for myself.
I have realised red is something that is good on me. I don’t have the guts yet to die my hair any other color, even though I would mostly like. But I’m happy as it is and I have some years more to experiment on my head.
So my answer to your friend is, that I dye my hair because it makes me feel better about me, it makes me happy and it gives me some more confidence in myself. even though it all started because I got bored of my natural color :p
Hope I helped :3
