I think military dog handlers usually start right from the basics of military life, i.e. They're in the armed forces or something or in the marines etc, then they gradually work their way up or into different jobs within the military. Or sometimes there are exceptions but only if you've had a really similar job to that before. I don't know where you're from but that's what usually happens in the UK :)

ah i see! i assumed it would be something like that, like you start at the base with ‘army’ and then as you progress you can choose the branches that you wish to enter. 

i’m in australia so i’m guessing there wouldn’t be that much difference in our systems, like they probably run in the same general way :D
