Ok. So in the early 80s the board game Monopoly was quite big, so to capitalize on this a group who called themselves The Parker Sisters (a play on the company that owned Monopoly at the time, The Parker Brothers) approached board game company called Fire Island Games with an idea; Monopoly, but gay. This resulted in the following game: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/11862/gay-monopoly
Now as you can probably tell, this game actually does more to stand out compared to your average Monopoly clone; it has a round board, it's own Mascot in Ollie Gaytor, all the money costs being in really annoying amounts, and a trivia mechanic where landing on certain spaces will result in you answering a question about either historical queer figures or the "hanky code" popular among gay men of the time. Now a notable problem with that last one is that this game was apparently somewhat of a rush job. After all Monopoly had only been on shelves for what, 48 years at that point. Who knows how much longer the fad will last? But anyways a lot of the trivia is just straight up wrong. (I don't have a definitive number as to what percentage but I know it's at least SOME).
Now unfortunately like all good stories the tale of Gay Monopoly came to an end, and all due to a simple mistake. You see; the reason games like Chicago-opoly, Horse-opoly, and Bibleopoly (yes those are all real) are allowed to exist with no involvement with the official Monopoly brand is that way back when that you can't copyright the word "monopoly", however you CAN copyright having the full word "monopoly" in the title of your board game. So as long as it's -opoly and not monopoly it's fine. (with the exception of ghettopoly, which is as bad as it sounds, but that's because the rube who made it chose to represent himself in court).
So basically since Gay Monopoly had the full word "monopoly" in it's title (fun fact a differnt part later made Gayopoly but it's far less interesting), they got sued by The Parker Brothers, which confused Fire Island Games, since apparently they thought that The Parker Sisters had the license to use the Monopoly brand. So they got sued into the dirt and Gay Monopoly was killed forever.
very interesting!! Sucks that it's no longer around cause it sounds entertaining
