Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania March 26th ~ 29th 2019
This was a pilgrimage that was inspired by two brilliant men.
The first was someone I knew since childhood. His soup cans were always in my house, and occassionaly on my plate. We share a home state, and similar looking blond haired, childhood photos. However, it wasn't until I lived on my own, (and off of chicken noodle soup) that I began to be enthralled with the life, and work of Andy Warhol. Arriving in this city of bridges, I took his bridge first over the river to his museum. From there I learned Andy isn't limited to this building. He's everywhere in this great city. Especially in the people. His personality seems to have attached to their souls, and still live on.
Malcolm was different. He didn't enter my life until I was a teenager. His lyrics didn't change my life, as much as they soothed it. We were the same age, grew up 300 miles apart, and for a whole generation he put into poetic songs what our lives were all about. After his death a few months back, I felt this pull to visit his city. Explore his old stomping grounds, and hopefully catch a glimpse of his spirit.
Throughout my trip I was by myself, which is how I like to travel. But on my last day I met someone that made me feel like both of these departed souls were with me this whole trip. On my last day I wanted to visit the park of the famous first album that introduced me to Mr. Mac Miller: Frick Park, also known as Blue Slide Park. I wanted to see that blue slide. As I walked into the park, a skinny man welcomed me, full of joy. He introduced himself as the park guide, he even pointed to his park guide hat. Very excited he told me about a rare owl, and their babies he had spotted not too far from where I entered. WIthout thinking we began walking to the spot, and he showed me where to look. As I gazed up, there on the top of a tree was this beautiful animal, staring down at us. Afterwards we walked through the park, and we talked the whole way. The one thing I didn’t tell Mr. Park Guide was the real reason I was visiting. And I didn’t need too. Because he lead me to the blue slide. *tears
