Mack hadn’t expected the public response to him and Will coming out to be this positive. Mostly because he had never actually considered them coming out in the first place. That would have required them to be a couple, which they were not, so the whole scenario had simply never made it onto his list of things to worry about. Now, however, he found himself wildly unprepared for just how enthusiastic people were about it. Because this clearly meant something. To a lot of people. The idea of two hockey players being in love and open about it wasn’t just nice, it was important. And disappointing that many people felt… bad. Which left him with only one option: convince Will to help him fake the whole thing. For representation. To prove that yes, hockey players could be gay and in love and all of that. That was the entire reason. Probably.

Bone Beside Belief

Will snorts. “Want me to wear your tooth on my chain for you or what?” Yes. God, yes. Mack wants that with a ferocity that no longer surprises him. The need is immediate and instinctive as pain. As hunger. It’s a body knowing what it wants before shame has the chance to catch up.

or: Will sends Mack a video about a tooth being used as the center stone of a ring. Mack stops wearing his mouth guard. The two things are decidedly not related.

Chapter 5: Chemistry (5,097 words)

“What’s up, buddy?” “Nothing.” Toff gave him a look. Technically Mack couldn’t know for sure that Toff was giving him a look, considering he was very committed to staring at literally anything except another person’s face right now, but he could feel it. “Okay,” Toff said, “let me phrase that differently. You are clearly stressed and acting weird as fuck. It’s stressing everyone out, and you’re ignoring your better half, which is fucking with everyone even more.” Mack briefly considered arguing the “better half” part. Because, well, not dating and all that. But then again, Toff didn’t know that. And also: Will definitely was his better half anyway. Not in, like, a soulmate way or whatever. Mack wasn’t insane. Just in a very objective sense.

Stairs, stairs, and more stairs. Oh, and love.

Will had planned to spend the evening lounging lazily on the couch, maybe sipping something cold and pretending the world doesn’t exist for a little while. Instead, he finds himself climbing what felt like a billion staircases. Not because he wants to, but because Mack had gone on a stupid post-workout workout up a trail that might as well have been called the Hike of Death, and now the idiot had twisted his ankle.

or: Will is pretty sure that no one ever warned him how many staircases being in love would involve. It never would have stopped him anyway.

The Weight of Being Good

Mack doesn’t distrust criticism. He understands it, knows how to work with it, how to fix what it points out. Praise is different. Praise is something he was taught to accept, yet not react too much, not lean into it. And yet, he needs it so desperately that it feels less like something he receives and more like something he’s constantly afraid of losing the moment it touches him.

Stuck

Getting stuck wasn’t exactly a new experience for Dream. He’d gotten stuck plenty of times before: in code, with work, in mental spirals that went down, down, down, until someone had to forcefully pull him back out. But getting stuck with George in their car at an automatic car wash? Yeah. That was a new one.
