“Buckeyes.” Dark pointed up the tree he and Anti were standing under. “It’s common for them to be turned into jewelry.”
“Those spikey little mounds?” Anti hopped up and plucked a low hanging buckeye.
“They break it open, take the seeds, let them dry out, and then drill a hole into it,” Dark explained.
“That sounds fucked up.” Anti squeezed the buckeye, feeling it poking at him.
“You’re usually supposed to wait for them to fall since there’s a chance they’re not done if you pluck them.” Dark gently moved Anti’s hand apart from each other so he wouldn’t hurt himself.
“So, if they fall, they’re ready?” Anti asked.
“Most likely.” Dark nodded.
“Hold my nut.” Anti tossed the buckeye at Anti.
“It’s not a…” Dark just sighed, knowing it was no use. “And what are you doing?”
“I’m gonna make them fall.” Anti jumped up to a low branch.
“Don’t do that. You’re going to get hurt.” Dark pinched the bridge of his nose.
“I know how to climb a tree, Darky, been doing it for a while.” Anti shimmied up a thicker branch.
“You haven’t been doing it, Sean did it as a child and you just have the physical memory of it due to-”
“Incoming!” Anti started to shake a branch and Dark have to cover his head as buckeyes rained down on him.
“There, you did it. Would you get down now?” Dark kicked one of the buckeyes away from him.
“Wait, one stayed on.” Anti started crawling further up the branch, feeling it bend under him but he was sure it was strong enough.
“Anti, I don’t think-Anti!” Dark quickly reacted when the branch gave out. He dove forward and caught Anti before he hit the ground. Anti was expecting to land face-first in the dirt and finding himself in Dark’s arm was a surprising, but not unwelcome, twist.
“Aw Dark, my great big, hero.” Anti giggled, having fun with the moment and wrapping his arms around Dark’s neck. He grinned when he saw Dark’s face becoming a darker shade of gray and he knew that meant he was blushing. “However will I repay the favor?” Anti added with a flutter of his eyelashes.
“Sh-Shut up.” Dark placed Anti back on the ground, fixing his suit. “Just grab some of the buckeyes and we’ll see if any of them work.”
“Yes, sir~” Anti practically purred and he laughed when Dark walked away, face still flushed.
Veggie fun fact: I actually have a buckeye tree in my front yard and my dad almost broke his back trying to shake a branch when we were younger.
