Yorkshire towns to install LED street lighting

Two of the largest towns in South Yorkshire have awarded contracts that will see the replacement of over 16,000 street lights converted to energy-efficient LED units. Imtech Traffic & Infra UK (Imtech) is continuing to expand its street lighting business with a new framework contract award from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) and a subsequent 18 month contract for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC). Work has started on both contracts, which see the replacement of the street lanterns through 2015, with completion for the projects expected by early 2016. The one to three year framework for Rohtherham MBC includes, but is not restricted to, the: installation and removal of lighting columns; installation of slip-over columns; and installation of replacement LED lanterns.

Lantern replacement, if required, includes: the removal of the existing luminaire and replacement with a pre-wired LED lantern; connecting the wiring into the existing isolator/cut out; and electrically testing the installation upon completion. The framework contract in Rotherham has been awarded for a period of one year initially, with the option to extend at the sole discretion of RMBC for a further two 12 month periods, whilst the contract for Barnsley MBC will run for 18 months. Julian Lidiard, director of urban contracts at Imtech Traffic & Infra, commented, “We have a proven record in on-street technology and infrastructure, and we are committed to applying our diverse skills to the lighting market. We are extremely pleased to be working with both Rotherham and Barnsley on these contracts.”
