Hawks is the Antithesis to Dabi
While they are both CLEARLY shitter millenials with no filters on their mouths, their main characterisation points–that is to say, their views on heroics–are counter to each other.
Hawks is the exceptionally skilled prodigy hero who trucked through the rankings effortlessly. He thinks the greatest measure of a hero is their popularity. He isn’t serious about rankings, and is generally carefree. Sometimes overly so. To Hawks, glory and fame make the hero, and should be the biggest factor in their rankings. He was glad Shouto didn’t join his agency because it would’ve “damaged his brand”. He also doesn’t care for All Might, who was the apex of “true heroes”.
Now Dabi who, if the DIAT theory is correct, is not naturally skilled and likely not trained. Secondary to Shouto since his birth. In the manga and even the Smash! spin-off he’s shown to be a serious individual who dives head first into his duties. He follows Stain’s ideology avidly and has taken it on as his personal goal, joining the League in order to fulfil it. As we saw with Stain, Dabi thinks corruption in a hero starts when they focus on the glory and fame of it all. Dabi believes in the idea of altruistic heroism, where a hero is only a hero if he’s out to save others. He likely looks to All Might as that example.
Though Endeavour is a selfish hero and is theorised to be the reason for Dabi’s jaded views, he still seeks to be the best on his own merit and ability. Hawks specifically sees heroism through the lens of public approval. He is everything Dabi hates.
If they were to meet it would not be on buddy terms.
chapter 187 SERIOUSE prediction
so are we gonna talk about how the new nomu said THIS fire? implicating he's been exposed to a diffrent type of fire before??
i have an issue
Okay, so I think we knew that this is Endeavor Redemption Arc was comin for a while now. Lot of us don't like it, some do. I feel like I'm the type of person who's like "FUCK ENDEAVOR HE'S TRASH" because I feel like he doesn't really deserve to redeem himself as a hero externally because I know he's not one internally (i.e. behaviors/relationships with his family, jealousy of all might) but let's move swiftly along..
and clearly in this first panel, we see that natsuo is on the same page as me. maybe not as aggressive as me but you know what I mean. natsuo is relaying this info to his mom for a reason, as a reminder that his hero status and his personality will never be rectified
and as the one who probably went through the most abuse (rei), he's essentially saying that she should not be swayed by his success. he's also implying that endeavor does feel some guilt ("he doesn't appear on talk shows"). originally, I thought that was because endeavor was a closed-off asshole, but maybe it's to avoid any and all questions about his family because he knows what he did but the world doesn't
also, the fact that rei has been in the hospital for 10 years is fucking wild. i really don't want to believe in my heart that endeavor just dropped his wife and mother of his children in a hospital to rot for 10 years in isolation but unfortunately that was the reality and it makes me sick. I'm sure his external reason was "well she burned my son so she's insane she needs help" but internally is was probably "this woman ruined my one chance to have an aesthetically perfect offspring". I feel like this is very much possible because of previous chapters expressing endeavor's obsession with producing a perfect kid with a perfect quirk. also it's very obvious (thanks to natsuo) that endeavor wanted to forget about rei hence putting her in a space where he couldn't see her would help with that guilt.
natsuo continues to backup his reason for never forgiving endeavor in a bullet point list:
terrible treatment to us (kids)
terrible treatment to you (rei)
non-existent behavior towards rei and shouto
never apologised for his actions
I personally feel like natsuo's feelings are completely justified because everything he said is true. He witnessed this shit first hand and he knows that endeavor is leaving his family behind in order to escape from his past actions.
okay THE ROOT OF THE FUCKING ISSUE IS HERE
when rei says "that's wrong" - this fucks me all the way up. even after natsuo just said all that stuff, rei is essentially like "I understand what you're saying, but he's different BECAUSE OF A FLOWER"
here's where the argument for the relationship between women and victimization comes in. in many stereotypical cisgender storylines, the woman gets hurt by the man. the man tries to redeem himself by giving a trash reason, gift, etc. the woman interprets said reason, gift, etc. as an opportunity to forgive all the man's wrongdoings and they fall back in love or whatever the fuck.
essentially this is what horikoshi is setting up. rei, because even though she's been through the worst, she can see the light of hope inside of endeavor and the flower and secret visits is proof, therefore making her the outsider opinion (in theory) in her own family. everybody knows that the kids don't like or trust endeavor, yet rei is the one outwardly disagreeing with natsuo because of endeavor's actions currently. Like she's willingly ready to forget everything he did and move on like none of that shit was traumatizing in the least. I think all of this is happening for the wrong reasons. we see the signs "I'm too afraid to face him" "my doctor thought it was a bad idea"
So why attempt to rekindle the relationship now in light of all these things?? her own children are shocked to the fact that endeavor would visit their mom because they know he's not that kind of person!
but no, ever since a couple chapters ago, when he had his fucking epiphany did he realize that maybe he should start treating his family better when he had to step up to the plate to be #1 hero.
but it's too late for that shit, bro. the reason this redemption arc gets me so hurt is because we know endeavor don't deserve that shit and now the one person (rei) who should be the most angry and sad at him, is not. so now it's like a weird twisted justification that makes everything okay but it doesn't.
now this whole "just watch me" phrase is the center of endeavor's redemption because now it's a message to not just the world or hero society, but his family too (according to the last panel).
summary:
HE SHOULD ALREADY HAVE BEEN VISITING REI IN THE HOSPITAL
HE SHOULD ALREADY HAVE BEEN BRINGING HER BUCKETLOADS OF FLOWERS
HE SHOULD ALREADY HAVE BEEN APOLOGIZED TO REI
STOP REWARDING ENDEAVOR FOR SHIT HE ALREADY SHOULD'VE BEEN DOING IN THE PAST.
