you look up from your phone, spotting katsuki walking towards you, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other gingerly holds a tub of ice cream by its lid. the streetlamps surround him in a soft glow, making him look almost angelic with his normally fierce features relaxed. it’s a welcome contrast to the image the public has of him, a side only you get to see.
“hey katsuki,” you slip your phone into your pocket, pulling away from the wall you were leaning against. you exchange a soft kiss, relishing in the metaphorical warmth that comes only when katsuki’s around. he presses another kiss to your forehead, free hand brushing briefly against your cheek.
“take the ice cream before it melts.” he shoves the pint into your hand, his warm palm grazing yours. you slip the lid open to take a peek, and melted goo greets you back.
“you already melted it kats.”
he scowls and looks away from you, rubbing a hand behind his neck. “it’s not my fucking fault that the ice cream can’t stand a little heat.”
you laugh softly at him, patting his arm. “you’re lucky i can refreeze it.”
a single, controlled touch to the base has the tub frosting over, and you check the inside to see that yes, the ice cream has now perfectly frozen back to its creamy goodness. katsuki grumbles something too low for you to catch, but fishes out a spoon wrapped in a napkin and hands it to you. you thank him by offering him the first spoonful of ice cream as you begin your patrol. he gently bumps your shoulder in thanks as you take a scoop for yourself.
midnight patrols were one of the few ways you and katsuki got to spend time together anymore. up and coming pro heros your schedules were filled with hero work, patrols, and publicity related things, leaving virtually no time for your social lives, let alone love lives. thus, when you found out that midnight patrols at both the agencies you worked at were highly unpopular due to the fact that not much occurred at night, you both jumped at the opportunity to patrol together.
midnight patrols thus became your informal date nights, with you filling pockets meant for bandages with snacks, and him bringing various drinks in thermos flasks for you to share, and on occasion little sandwiches if he had the time to make them. most nights were blissfully quiet, void of people barring the occasional night owl and the clubbers making their way home.
that was another reason why you two had signed up for midnight patrols rather than day patrols - there weren’t any adoring fans mobbing you two, no paparazzi trailing your every step and trying to collect any information they deemed to be ‘juicy gossip’ for the tabloids.
no, at midnight, the only people that existed were you and katsuki. at midnight, demetria and dynamight took a backseat in the absence of villains. at midnight, you two were just you and katsuki.
