I don’t think Todokorki would be manipulative enough to use his backstory to try to sway Deku from competing against him. I think he told Deku all that so Deku could understand what, exactly, was driving him forward so much. 

So I’m glad Deku isn’t letting that stop him from moving forward. His reasoning for it may not be as dark or heavy as Todoroki. But it is just as important.
