hello everybody I am finally back and I am so pleased to be reviewing the brand-new music video from BoA titled "Better" I hope you enjoy this review. Also, please go check out the music video if you haven't already. Thank you very much
Managed to listen to it and I have shit to say so let’s get on with it 😂.
Better - Already posted on this individually since it was the single but I really like this one!! Funky sound throughout with a satisfactory chorus and some iconic moments of the queen of K-pop, thank you 😂.
Temptations - Okay this one had quite a weird start but oh they saved it when the chorus hit 😂. The verses had a bitty and illogical (to me) progression, but then it kind of got itself together and it got good! 😂. Although she had a higher sounding voice here the music was a lot deeper into the ground and it gave it a really cool sound and intensity 😂.
Cloud - Can someone please tell me why SM are so good at ballads like I’m not a huge ballads person but SM ballads are so good 😂. It takes the music of a ballad for me to like it, and this had a strong drum beat throughout which I guess gave the song more of an edge than a typical ballad, which I thought was an interesting but good way to go 😂. Also BoA HITTING THOSE HIGH NOTES it sounded like she was putting everything into this vocal performance (not that she doesn’t with every song lmao) and it really paid off cos it just elevated the whole song 😂. The riffing at the end was slightly annoying tho I mean I appreciate the vocal talent but also when people do that it really annoys me 😂.
All That Jazz - I can’t be the only one who was half expecting a cover ANYWAY it was a cool song! Jazz based songs can be very hit and miss for me but this was really good, I think cos it was slightly quicker paced than other K-pop jazz songs it kept me interested 😂. There seemed to be some beatboxing in the second verse tho? Okay... odd direction to go in 😂. But it was overall a nice song!
L.O.V.E - OH I LOVED THIS ONE it had such a chill disco vibe it was a proper dance song it was great 😂. It was a very dance disco pop song but had some earthiness to it that gave it some intensity, which had me SCREAMING I love that so much 😂. All the backing vocals was interesting and I thought they were a nice addition! Added to the party atmosphere 😂. This might be my favourite song from the album haha 😂.
Cut Me Off - Honestly I cannot decide if I liked this one or not. I adored BoA singing in her lower register throughout and the overall intensity of the song, but I feel like I wanted it to build up more? And I can definitely like chill songs like this (I defended Ice Cream by BLACKPINK fiercely lol) but for what it was offering? I think it could have been better 😂. But I do somewhat like it... I do like the low intensity of it, but as it goes in it loses that a bit with the generic trap sounds being added into the instrumental which also puts me off, but I do like it! Just not as much as the other songs 😂.
Got Me Good - Mmm no didn’t really like this one. I don’t really know what it was, because BoA’s vocals were great, and there wasn’t really any music that put me off, and actually had some musical elements I really liked. I think it was just a little too slow paced for me, had the tempo been increased slightly it might have a little more to it for me. Also the outro again what is it just end it and leave it at that 😂.
Honey & Diamonds - Safe to say... least favourite song from this album 😂. It did have some of that light funky BoA-esque beat in the verses, but it kind of went downhill and started drifting into generic modern pop than BoA K-pop 😂. And the chorus (then bridge) didn’t help as it focused on the trap beat more than the funky sound from the start of the song, it’s like they switched places 😂. It doesn’t completely give in to modern pop trends, which I guess is a good thing, but it’s closer to them than other songs on this album which puts me off it 😂.
Start Over - This one had a really nice nostalgia pop sound to me idk why but I loved it 😂. It wasn’t really loud or music heavy, and had a simple instrumental at first before it got more into the song, but it never felt empty or unsatisfying 😂. I also really liked the bridge section with BoA’s vocals and the music building up before going back down for a brief section, then just going right back up for the last chorus. I feel like that’s a trend of old pop which I’m glad was brought back 😂.
Gravity - Again, a very good ballad, why is this 😂. It was VERY chill at first with two recognisable sounds going on in the instrumental, then it just brings in a couple more suddenly and keeps it there 😂. For a song called Gravity it ironically had a very light and airy sound, and BoA’s vocals got higher than a high school dropout owned crack den 😂. But yeah this was a really nice calming yet substantial song 😂.
Little Bird - Can I just say, very fitting end song for a 20th anniversary album 😂. It had such a grandness to it, almost marching band stomp and clap in some places, but for me it gave me a sense of pride? 😂. Like, hey, this is BoA, the woman who’s been doing this for 20 years and single handedly saved the musical relationship between two countries 😂. That’s what I got from this lmao 😂.
So overall this was a really nice album!! Couple of iffy spots but hey that’s to be expected in 2020 music unfortunately 😂. Also can I just say well done to BoA for doing this for 20 years like she debuted before I even existed and like what have I kept up for 19 years absolutely nothing so well done 😂.
