Ok I may have sort of a definitive answer, if only in a specific situation.

I went to art school. Turned out to be a shitty school with weirdly named majors (mine was "animation and game art") but that's besides the point. I had to take a game design class where we were taught the basics of unreal engine.

For us, closed doors were the default. We were shown how to make a trigger for them to open when a character got close enough.

In this case at least, I think it's safe to say a closed door would be off and an open door would be on.

Pretty reasonable answer if you are an NPC in a Unreal Engine game.

Unfortunately I live on Earth in the real world where Jonesy does not exist. Sorry :(
