Monohull or Catamaran: The 9 Perfect Benefits of Each Hull Type for 2026
Monohull or Catamaran: The 9 Perfect Benefits of Each Hull Type for 2026
Monohull or catamaran... When planning your trip to the Adriatic, one of the first questions the charter agent will ask is: "Are you looking for a monohull or catamaran?" For some, the choice is a matter of tradition; for others, it's about pure holiday luxury. In 2026, the rise of the trimaran has also added a third, high-performance option to the mix.
At Yacht Sail Training, our base in Milna sees all three types pass through daily. We use monohulls for our core RYA Day Skipper courses because they teach you the "feel" of the wind, but we know that for a sailing holiday in Croatia, the best choice depends entirely on your goals. Here are 9 benefits to help you decide.
1. The Monohull: The Purist’s Joy
The single-hull sailing yacht is the "classic" choice. If you want to feel the boat lean (heel) into the wind and slice through the waves, a monohull is unbeatable.
- Benefit 1: Better Upwind Performance. Monohulls can sail closer to the wind than most cruising catamarans. If you have a long leg to sail against the Maestral, you’ll appreciate the efficiency. - Benefit 2: Lower Charter and Mooring Costs. Generally, monohulls are cheaper to rent. Furthermore, because they take up half the space of a multihull, your marina fees in spots like Hvar or Split will be significantly lower. - Benefit 3: The "Authentic" Feel. There is a visceral satisfaction in balancing a monohull on its keel. It’s why we use them for learning to sail in Croatia. 2. The Catamaran: The Floating Villa
Catamarans have exploded in popularity because they prioritize living space and stability. For many modern travelers, they are the "perfect" choice.
- Benefit 4: Stability at Anchor. Because they have two hulls, catamarans don’t "roll" in a swell. You can leave your wine glass on the table without worrying about it sliding off. This is a game-changer for those prone to seasickness. - Benefit 5: Massive Social Spaces. The "bridge deck" between the hulls creates a huge salon and cockpit on one level. It’s ideal for large families or groups who want to cook and socialize together. - Benefit 6: Shallow Draft. Catamarans can go where monohulls can’t. With a draft often under 1.2 meters, you can anchor much closer to the beach in shallow bays like Lovrečina. 7. The Trimaran: The Speed Demon
Trimarans (three hulls) are rarer in the charter fleet but offer a unique middle ground for those with valid licenses looking for something different.
- Benefit 7: Unrivaled Speed. Trimarans are typically the fastest cruising boats. If you want to cover the distance from Milna to Dubrovnik in record time, this is your hull. - Benefit 8: Ultimate Safety. Trimarans are incredibly difficult to capsize and are often built with unsinkable foam cores, making them a favorite for offshore adventurers. 9. Maneuverability: The Tie-Breaker - Benefit 9: Twin Engine Control. This is where the catamaran (and some trimarans) wins. Having two engines - one in each hull - allows you to pivot the boat 360 degrees on its own axis. This makes docking in tight Croatian marinas much less stressful than handling a single-engine monohull. Which Hull Type is Right for Your Training?
If you are coming to Yacht Sail Training to get certified, we usually recommend starting on a monohull. Learning to manage the heeling and the single-point pivot of a monohull makes you a more sensitive, skilled sailor. Once you master the "hard way," stepping onto a stable catamaran feels like a breeze.
