Small but important reminder that Holmes and Watson grew old. They reached retirement age. Watson wasn't killed in battle and Holmes didn't die at the Reichenbach, but they both survived. They survived the hundreds of mad criminals they went up against too. It's canonical that they became old men, even though that was a difficult feat: both because of their livelihoods and the era which they lived in. Holmes retired to the countryside. There's nothing to say that Watson didn't eventually also do the same.

They didn't die tragically- they lived full lives, and there's something very hopeful about that.

Oh I love when Holmes refuses to progress any further with a case when the client isn't being truthful for him. Its only happened a couple times, but its a nice bit of characterization

Any thoughts if John and Mary's marriage was a lavender marriage? (ACD)

Hi Lovely!

For those unaware, a Lavender Marriage is "a male–female mixed-orientation marriage undertaken as a marriage of convenience to conceal the socially stigmatized sexual orientation of one or both partners. [SOURCE]

That said, I honestly would like to think that it is, for John anyway. I'm not SUPER familiar with the original canon (one of these days I'm going to read the canon hardcover books a Lovely sent me in the mail YEARS ago, LOL), but if I recall what people have mentioned in meta correctly, Watson BARELY mentions Mary at all in the stories, and she altogether gets forgotten about. And, again, if I recall correctly, those stories were written around the same time ACD's good friend Oscar Wilde was on trial and his books were used against him, so, like it's not hard to see a reason Watson was suddenly married.

AGAIN I HAVEN'T READ CANON, but I know canon Watson is ridiculously coded as either bi or biromantic, so like, yeah, I totally vibe with the Lavender Marriage theory, LOL.

Great story so far, i especially loved the passage where holmes and watson voluntary poison themselve for the sake of experiment, and watson save their asses with the power of homoerotic friendship
